Vitter's Whoremongering Makes Christians 'A Little Horny'
While sane people are laughing at the embarrassing exploits of sex criminal, infantile fetishist and family-values Senator David Vitter, actual evangelical fundamentalist Christian Republicans are once again trying to make sense of a world in which the sickest motherfuckers are all evangelical fundamentalist Christian Republicans who, whenever they're not paying a hooker to dress them in diapers, are calling for the "immoral" to be thrown out of political office, the military, schools, the workplace, etc.
Why is that?
Newsweek asked prominent evangelical D.C. lobbyist guy Michael Cromartie to explain, and here are a few gloomy answers from the dark, miserable, closeted world of American evangelicalism:
* "It ought to be the case that evangelicals, while not condoning such behavior, are not surprised by such sinful behavior. I'm not surprised by vice. I'm surprised by virtue."
* "Classical Christianity has always had a negative view of human nature. Generally, the belief has been that people are broken and fallen and frail."
* "Any movement that goes around promoting family values and then doesn't live by them personally is certainly hypocritical."
* "There's a kind of stunned silence at first. Someone said, "This is an embarrassment. How can a movement recover?" I said, "You act as if something like this has never happened.""
* "There's some disillusionment on the religious left and right. But that's because they expected more out of politics than they ever should have."
