Bill Barr Will Defend Religious Bigots From Heathens Who Want To Mind Their Own Business
Bill Barr, attorney general and Donald Trump's consigliere, spoke to law students at Notre Dame Friday. He did not discuss actual law or even list his top 10 episodes of "Law & Order." Instead, he yelled at clouds about "religious freedom," which Christian zealots define as their Zuul-given right to impose their bigoted beliefs on everyone else.
Barr said that in the 20th Century, America defeated the forces of fascism and communism, but apparently America's true enemy in this century are people who don't handle snakes.
BARR: Modern secularists dismiss this idea of morality as sort of otherworldly superstition imposed by killjoy clergy. But, in fact, Judeo-Christian standards are the ultimate utilitarian rules for human conduct.
Jesus Christ, what an awful pair of sentences! Barr is preaching Christian supremacy, which is not "religious freedom" because there are other religions in the world. Some are even on Google. As a baby-eating secularist myself, I don't "dismiss the idea of morality." I just believe that morality can exist without the threat of eternal damnation or the ritualistic hiding of eggs every spring.

BARR: Among the militant secularists are many so-called progressives, but where is the progress? We are told we are living in a post-Christian era, but what has replaced the Judeo-Christian moral system?
Conservatives exist in this alternate reality where Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton gave speeches where they boasted that "God is dead!" and cackled diabolically before declaring the start of a soulless "post-Christian era." Here on earth, Obama and Clinton were both advocates of legitimate religious freedom.
"Militant secularists" aren't bombing churches, synagogues, and other houses of worship. That was alleged white supremacists who probably believed their victims worshipped a lesser God. Religion's true enemy is other religious people. Secularists just want the Bible-dependent to leave us alone.

Barr went on to blame godless heathens for all society's ills, including "violence, depression, and drug use." American families have "disintegrated" as if queer space aliens fired a death ray at them. He claimed that the country's "out-of-wedlock" rate was just eight percent in 1965 and now it's a whopping 40 percent. Way to go, hussies! Barr doesn't consider that the "out-of-wedlock" rate has increased because women aren't forced to marry some asshole just because their condom broke. I also know successful, unmarried women who chose to have children without a man involved. They are perfectly capable of raising kids on their own. It's insulting to try to pin the downfall of civilization on female autonomy. But when conservatives talk about "religious freedom," they are actually denouncing women's emancipation.
What Goodman Barr describes as an "increasing attack" on religion over the past 50 years coincides with women's growing economic and political power. More women worked outside the home -- not just as domestics but in fields once dominated by white men. Women fought for the right to have credit in their own name (and they're still judged for how they spend their money).
This explains how supposedly religious people like Barr can support a festering moral boil like Trump. If Christian supremacy is less about whatever Jesus might've believed and more about a preferred social order, Donald Trump represents a return to those simpler "Mad Men" times. He is forever their savior for standing athwart history and, with a little help from his Russian friends, yelling "Stop!" at a woman who dared try to lead the free world.
Barr grossly claimed that New Jersey "recently passed a law requiring schools to adopt a LGBT curriculum that many feel is inconsistent with traditional Christian teaching." What the measure actually does is require public schools to include lessons about the contributions of LGBTQ Americans. If you think it's "inconsistent" with your faith for your children to learn that queer humans positively contributed to society, your "faith" is bigoted garbage. LGBTQ people exist. Deal with it or GTFO.
BARR: As long as I'm attorney general, the Department of Justice will be at the forefront of this effort, ready to fight for the most cherished of all our American liberties, the freedom to live according to our faith.
That's a shameful threat. Unlike Pete Buttigieg, Barr can't imagine religious faith co-existing with kindness or compassion for others. It's no surprise that Trump fits in so well with religious conservatives.
