Herman Cain Wins Straw Poll, GOP Gives Up 2012 White House Bid
Here is some interesting election news: the Republican National Committee has apparently amended its website to indicate that it finally abandoned the prospect of trying to beat Barack Obama in 2012. They'll try again in 2016 and see if this floats up anything more interesting than the crowd of grossly illiterate and tiresome whiners filling the field to date. Cut your losses, they've got the next one locked down, etc. We also hear that pizza god Herman Cain won the straw poll at the Western Conservative Summit in Colorado with a 35-point lead over his closest competitor, Ricky Perry. Are these things related? Probably not. Sure, why not.
An entire regional swath of the GOP voter base is still more interested in a long-shot wingnut candidate who thinks the First Amendment is a law prohibiting sharia atheists from building networks of terror command centers known as "churches" in Arabic. This is as good a time as any to just have some laffs and say, eh, let's save our money for next time. Perhaps this is that "fiscal prudence" the GOP keeps talking about.
It is not the first time Cain has done a mutant unicorn leap into a frontrunner spot. He "won" the first GOP debateporn taping in South Carolina, simply because he's....what, able to get through a sentence with a minimum of grammatical errors, not counting awkward syntax? We do not know, really, as he seems just about as insane and gaffe-prone as the rest of them.
From the Denver Post:
A presidential straw poll conducted at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver overwhelmingly chose Herman Cain for president, with Texas Gov. Rick Perry the runner-up.
Both Cain and Perry spoke to during the three-day event. Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, who is a presidential candidate, also addressed the summit.
A total of 508 ballots were cast and Cain received 48 percent of the vote and Perry 13 percent, according to the events organizers.
Cain, who attended the summit, won a solid 48% of the vote while Ricky, also in attendance, won a paltry 13%.
