I guess I don't see the "norms" changing decades ago. And I do remember Anita Hill - maybe if "norms" had changed, her testimony may have made a difference. And there were many more men "at fault" there than just Joe.
I don't think you can retrofit changing "norms" to that period.
As you say, Joe acknowledged that his attitudes toward Anita Hill in those confirmation hearings - he did do long before this current controversy, no matter what you think.
In 1991, law professor Anita Hill sat before the Senate Judiciary Committee, led by Senator Joe Biden, and detailed the alleged harassment she experienced from her boss, Clarence Thomas, who was just about to be confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. Throughout Hill's testimony, she weathered attacks on her character and her trustworthiness from those on the Senate panel, and many have blamed Biden for allowing those attacks and failing to do more. Nearly three decades after her testimony, and after Thomas was seated on the court, Biden wants Anita Hill to know that he's sorry. In an interview with Teen Vogue's editor in chief, Elaine Welteroth, Biden said there are a few things he would do differently if he could go back and redo those Anita Hill hearings."I believed Anita Hill. I voted against Clarence Thomas. And I insisted the next election — I campaigned for two women Senators on the condition that if they won they would come on the Judiciary Committee, so there would never be again all men making a judgment on this," Biden said. "And my one regret is that I wasn’t able to tone down the attacks on her by some of my Republican friends. I mean, they really went after her. As much as I tried to intervene, I did not have the power to gavel them out of order. I tried to be like a judge and only allow a question that would be relevant to ask."
I think Joe's role in those hearings, and in the maltreatment of Anita Hill, are being overinflated and made more personally mean - for political benefit by some, and ignorance and faulty memories/research by others
Both. And "nuclear weapons are much more useful as a deterrent and will never be actually used" bolsters my disagreement with them being Russian satellite states.
Urban people can choose public transitThis midwestern urbanite laughs at your naivete. There isn't one in walking distance to me either. Fortunately, there is one (used to be two) along my route home from work.
I used to be able to get milk from a QuikTrip within walking distance, but they moved a half mile down the road, and now I would have to walk though an underpass with no sidewalk and no shoulder. Or take a two-mile detour. I've very occasionally seen people walking through, but I'm not ready to be hit by a car.
I don't have stats, but I doubt it is "most". F'r instance, Missouri no longer has a state tax on food, but local and county taxes are legal, common, and add up to quite a bit. My other experiences are with California (none) and Kansas (already commented by Shan). I believe Illinois taxes food. I've never heard of Missourians going to Illinois to grocery shop, but they do register their cars in Illinois if they have a friend or relative whose address they can use. Also Illinoisans gas up in Missouri if they are close to the state line or work in MO.
I didn't pretend anything . I just pointed out that the norms changed decades ago and OHJ didn't get it. Remember Anita Hill. His acknowledgment is a day late and a dollar short, not to mention a weasel. Lots of pols campaign successfully without kissing women's hair or near-gropes.That said, I will support him with both time and money if he is nominated. I have no use for him until that happens with so many other great choices available.
So, now that he says he DOES get it, you still want to throw him by the wayside? Have you ever experienced political activities? There's a reason why "press the flesh" is a synonym for political handshaking. It's the same as pols kissing babies. Take a look at some of the campaigning that Clinton or Obama did
If you don't like it, fine - just don't pretend that your experience in the corporate world is equivalent to what was, at least, EXPECTED campaign behavior. Sure times have changed, and Joe has acknowledged that now. Stop pretending this is a legitimate reason to not support him.
[ I am not supporting Joe - unless of course, he runs the table and is the Democratic candidate next year. ]
The behaviors being censured are all optional. No one makes you embrace, smell, kiss etc. women you meet. I was corporate middle management from the 70s until I retired in 2008. Along the way various women told me they didn't like this or that (optional) touching or language and I incorporated those views into my workplace behavior. It wasn't hard. By 198? , I wouldn't touch, etc women in the workplace without clear permission or request, e.g. a hug from a close associate after my wife died . Men who did these things ran into increasing negative reactions until even the top executives in my line of work were held to the same standard.Again, IT IS NOT HARD to avoid offensive behavior SO JUST DON'T DO IT. OHJB has had decades to absorb this lesson. Much as I like him in some ways, he doesn't get it and needs to move aside (as does Bernie) for those who do get it.

I just watched a YouTube video of Obama addressing the Canadian parliament, and now I'm feeling really stabby.

Oh how I miss John Cameron Swayze, uncle Walter and Edward R. Murrow. Even Dave Garroway.
18 miles to the Food Lion, one way. Nice time to think deep thoughts!

Hell, there is often a 50 cent gap between stations a mile apart here.

The tiles remind me of old Cuban restaurants in Tampa FL.. Probably the look MMPost was looking for.
'Tis a butt... with pink frosting and coconut flakes ... :-)
All this time I thought it was a slipper.
Cool! I've only been to Jordan and Israel, but I'm fascinated by the region.
