Serendipity, the elder cat, the ex-feral, is too cool for words. She has seen it all and nothing flaps her. For Gryffn, the world is a big ball of wonder and possibilities.

She was accustomed to seeing squirrels on videos, and also seeing squirrels in the tree next to the deck. So when she first saw baby panda videos, the logic chain is easy to follow, and I happen to catch it.

Top comment in the Youtube comment section for Beyonce's Jolene:

Steve Bannonn increasingly looks like a golem left out in the rain. His idea that Trump doesn't need to appeal to woman voters is good news for Democrats. Also discourage people from mail-in voting, don't Get Out The Vote and just expect God to care about who gets elected president.

Mark Lungo's avatar

Steve Bannon: "This trial on the 15th is to destroy Trump in front of the American people and particularly women." Trump has already done that himself.

Craig Nixon's avatar

He's worried about Trump's image in front of WOMEN???

So based on reporting by Haaretz the Israeli murder of seven humanitarian workers was highly deliberate - the vehicles were hit 3 times by a drone but were able to drive more than a mile between the first and the final attacks.

CambridgeKnitter's avatar

What can one even say to that?

rawrtigerlily's avatar

Sure seems like an intentional effort to drive away all the humanitarian aid from Gaza so Bibi can starve even more people, faster before also bombing them into oblivion.

It makes me very angry that we're apparently poised to send some more weapons to Israel. There needs to be an immediate "fuck no, you're cancelled." There's no point in us trying to appeal to both sides via carrots, if Israel is just going to make sure the carrot of humanitarian aid can't be distributed safely.

Ms.Moon's avatar

Bibi doesn’t care. The US has been sending him support for this war.

I just listened to Beyonces' album and it will be lingering in my mind for a bit. A couple of really good ones and yes Jolene stands out. I think I like the message better (blasphemy i know) than the original.

I'm not even going to waste my time attempting to roll my eyes at the hurt buttheads of county music and just be happy that we have amazing music by amazing people and leave it at that.

Craig Nixon's avatar

Maybe not the hurt buttheads of country music, but maybe a take from another Black artist, one who works in related genres full-time. Out today via guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Yasmin Williams: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/apr/02/beyonce-version-of-country-cowboy-carter-yasmin-williams

Palisadesoffunkedelic's avatar

Yasmin has some points that I will think about but I still prefer Beyonces' autonomy to Partons pleas.

DDB9000's avatar

But Beyoncé has never been autonomous. On her last album, on most tracks there are 20-30 songwriters listed. She claimed she gave credits to all the people who played on the album. Anyone who knows how music publishing works knows that is bullshit.

And while I don't remember the title of the song, there is one where she is dancing on a stage with other women and there are the lyrics ''if you want it then you better put a ring on it" I assume that she is referring to sex perhaps? But the video ends with the word ''FEMINIST'' in huge capital letters on the stage. So is her not at all feminst messsage that if you want sex you have to marry her. Not surprising for someone who has called herself Mrs. Carter.

Craig Nixon's avatar

Yeah, I looked and I couldn't find anywhere that gives credit to everyone playing on the album. The featured guests? Sure, but not everyone else. Come to think of it, a Xitter convo began because the author of that Guardian piece, Yasmin Williams, had gotten a ton of messages asking if she played on "Riverdance". She didn't, but asked if anyone knew who did. Even music nerd that I am, I haven't found out yet. The multiple composer credits thing in pop music is another entire thing, too...

DDB9000's avatar

I have been a non-fan of Beyoncé ever since she left Destiny's Child, which was managed by her FATHER. Basically he took the member of that gorup with the LEAST talent and worst voice and gave her a solo career. Kelly Rowlnads was the BEST singer in that group and I have her first two albums.

Also, Daddy Rowlands was the one who introduced her to Jay-Z, knowing a big money deal when he saw one. Mr. Carter took the bait and he and Mrs. Carter evenually had a dughter who got to wear a multi-million dollar designer dress.

Meanwhile, other Knowles daughter, Solange, is both a much better vocalist, and a musician who plays many various instriuments. I have two of her albums and an EP.

Craig Nixon's avatar

Solange is badass. I've never been interested in Bey either...and prob would never have been involved in the convo if it weren't that a few of the artists dicussing it are friends.

Craig Nixon's avatar

Fair enough. It just came up as part of another discussion with several artists, Yasmin being one of them. Yas is an incredible player, certainly worth checking out some of her own stuff.

Here in California, our home insurance is $1.6K/year, and auto insurance $4K/year. Three cars, four drivers, no tickets or accidents.

Seek's avatar

My insurance company no longer insures homes in CA, so we’re having to move to the FAIR plan. Ok, premiuim is about the same for house at $3k. Oh but now you need supplemental insurance to cover everything else except the house burning down and that is also $3K. Huh, I did not see that coming. (Actually I did see it coming but it still hurts)

2 cars, 2 drivers, no tickets, no accidents $2k/yr - my insurance on the car hasn’t cancelled but they aren’t taking any new policies either.

Satanic Pancake's avatar

Our home insurer, if we miss a payment, will cancel our policy and not reinsure us, as they too are getting out of the market, but supposedly they have to keep insuring the people who renew on time.

Seek's avatar

Mine sent me 4 months notice that they were leaving the state entirely and noping out on everything - Travellers for the record. They gave me all of the info to get on the state FAIR plan and my agent did the rest. Annoying and expensive but not a huge surprise we are surrounded by open space and have had major rural/urban interface fires within 5 miles.

Satanic Pancake's avatar

Fire is supposed to be a natural part of the redwoods life cycle, but fortunately we haven't had one in this neighborhood in about 100 years. Here's hoping we can go at least another 50.

Lascauxcaveman's avatar

I think the main thing keeping from buying my wife a 2024 Prius is the extra cost of insurance. Her 18-year-old Durango is a major gas hog, but it's cheap to insure.

Satanic Pancake's avatar

Yeah, at this point, our oldest car is a 2013 Hyundai hybrid. Followed by a 2014 Sienna, and a 2022 Leaf. When we had older vehicles, it was definitely lower.

GiggleSnort's avatar

Grenell made himself quite unpopular in Germany, for example after he said "I absolutely want to empower other conservatives throughout Europe, other leaders." Like Orbán for example. He was also friendly with Germany's home-grown not-quite-Nazi-but-close AfD party and other far-right German groups.

Lascauxcaveman's avatar

Sherry's avatar

Has anyone heard anything from Beyonce new album? Supposedly Jolene has a helluva twist.

I find it incredible that some wypipo seem outraged that (gasp!) a Black person would do country as if Darrius Ruckus and Charlie Pride never existed nor the fact that music belongs to everyone not to mention a shit ton of appropriation from Black artists by white peoples.

Make a deal. No Black people doing country for no white people doing rap. Devil’s bargain because we’d all miss out on so many talented artists.

Antifa Commander's avatar

Feh. Musicians are thieves, and they’re supposed to be. Appropriation is part of the job description.

Sherry's avatar

It truly is part of the job description. I’m (was) a singer and I definitely have influences that have shaped my technique and delivery.

Music is like cooking. You blend all you know into something delicious. No different for Beyonce. Also she’s fromTX! I mean all the Mexican and Tejano and delta blues music she grew up with completely informed her.

Notice no one is mad at Darius or Pride. Guess cuz she’s a strong wealthy woman that they’re triggered.

Satanic Pancake's avatar

No Black people doing country that doesn't have Black roots, and no white people doing any of the musics that has Black roots.

Sherry's avatar

Well there goes a majority of white music. Rolling Stones will lose their early catalog due to the heavy blues influence. Same for Led Zeppelin and a holy host of rock and rollers. Buh Bye Slim Shady.

Emil Muz's avatar

Good Times Bad Times, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and Communication Breakdown are three of the first four songs on Led Zeppelin I and none of them have any connection to blue, Delta, Chicago or otherwise (all though they may have some of the same notes.😄)

DDB9000's avatar

"Black Mountain Side'' is an instrumental which Page STOLE the arrangement of from folk singer Anne Briggs' version of a traditional folk song called "Blackwater Side".

It is known that he had seen her in a London club previously.

Whille originally not credited to her but to Page, it is now listed as ''traditional, arrangement by Anne Briggs''...

Emil Muz's avatar

I was under the impression that he was more familiar with the Bert Jansch record that used the similar arrangement.

(reference drawn from "Hammer of the Gods" that I looked up earlier that also mentioned Briggs)

I get your point, but I think there's a lot more gray area in "traditional folk songs" especially the English canon where arrangements and interpretations have more subjectivity.

DDB9000's avatar

He was familair with both and probably did see Bert Jansch do it also. In addition, I notice that it has not actually been credited to her - yet.

Satanic Pancake's avatar

I figure we would just lose rock, blues, pop, and anything else outside of Gregorian chants and Celtic music.
