Oh yeah, that is particularly cool. On a chalkboard, that animator had to draw each successive frame by hand, no tracing, no tweening. And it’s super-clean. Talent!
I had a friend in middle school that would do the animation on the pages of her books, where you would flip the pages and a mouse would dance across the bottom of the page.
I love those old comic strips where the artwork is so gorgeous, especially "Little Nemo" and "Krazy Kat" (though I've never quite been able to wrap my brain around Herriman's surreal dialogue). There was a period in high school where I just devoured any books of old comics I could find.
There’s an annual comic festival in our nearby city (Angouleme, the French capital of comics) and a few years ago one of the salons was displaying original full-page newspaper sheets for strips like Nemo in Slumberland and Little Bears and so many other beautiful pieces. I was in there for hours, just delighting at the inventiveness and gorgeous artwork.
Much of what we think of when we think of editing as a critical part of cinematic storytelling came through the innovations of Blackton wotking for Edison's studio. You managed to work both Blackstone and Walter Lantz, who used to host the TV show featuring hIs cartoons, into your piece.
It seems sometimes that early cinema was a handful of ardent enthusiasts who all knew each other. There are names that come up frequently. And a lot of these same guys went on to big productions or inventing technologies and techniques that the modern giant business of movie and film depend upon. Really, it’s a fascinating history.
Frederick Burr Opper (January 2, 1857 – August 28, 1937) was one of the pioneers of American newspaper comic strips, best known for his comic strip Happy Hooligan. His comic characters were featured in magazine gag cartoons, covers, political cartoons and comic strips for six decades.
The business end of that rocket seems to be rather unfortunately aimed with respect to the chair, but the view cuts away at the moment of ignition when that would be most apparent.
Reading about Happy Hooligan makes me remember the funnies--one of the supplements that came with the Saturday newspaper. There was a magazine, too. There's nothing like starting the day remembering about long gone things to remind you that you're now an old person.
I always think a great litmus test for whether people in ye olden tymes were racist is “Would another olden tymes person be able to spot them as a racist?” If the answer is yes, there isn’t even a debate about if it is woke to cancel them. If they were so racist back in the day that their contemporaries were like, “Uninvite them, they’ll say a bunch of racist crap and it’ll suck”, then that is a fair judgement. Into the pit of woke with them!
So, like, HP Lovecraft and Woodrow Wilson, see ya!
This is also why future generations will memory hole modern douches like DeSantis or the Libs of TikTok chick. It’s a low bar, but if even ye olde tyme people knew you deserved cancellation, then YOU DESERVE CANCELLATION. Saves a lot of philosophical debate.
My favorite performance by Tracy Chapman was when she played at Wenberley - walked out on stage with her guitar and sang it. I cried then, I cry every time I rewatch it. It’s not a happy song. Idk how this was confusing to people.
A friend of mine went on their first cruise and on the opening night dance a guy dropped dead right mid dance. 2 other people died on the ship that week.
After watching the Tracy Chapman video I calmed down from my rage at Venmo. I had posted my story of been tormented by them but deleted it because I didn't want that negativity hanging at the top of the page. I will retell the story tonight.
Oh no! Marianne Williamson has suspended her campaign! Who am I supposed to vote for now? And how the hell am I going to unload all these crystals on the rubes?
A) I hope this review doesn't take as long as the Eastman Bar removal. B) I'm going to assume Republican and now qualifies for tfg VP short list C) Chlamydia?
Besides Johnson being awful and not being able to count, it is notable that Trump single-handedly strongarmed Republicans into torpedoing the immigration/foreign aid compromise they supported, until they didn't. All it took was a word from the Orange One, and they fell into line. And he's not even President! Geez, their noses are brown. And Trump is a chaos agent: do they really want to follow his every whim?
It’s a Happy Hooligan hed gif. Happy was a very early newspaper cartoon character. More info and a link to the whole skit here: https://open.substack.com/pub/martiniambassador/p/a-happy-hooligan-trip-to-the-moon
Early SpaceX simulation
I’ve always been fascinated by the history of early animation, and have only recently learned how much existed in the silent era pre Disney even.
This is 118 years old. 22 years pre steamboat Willie. It feels like a time capsule

Quite frankly it blows my demented little mind that this film segment is six years older than my maternal grandfather who was born in 1915.]
This could easily be a clever YouTube video. It's fascinating...

Cool gif! I love early animation.

As always ...😁

Whatever happened to Bernhard Goetz? Time for a comeback?
One way to get banned for life from a cruise ship is to die on the cruise ship. You won't be invited back.
RIP, Mojo.

I swear some people only read the title. This is why so many non-album notes readers think Rage Against The Machine has recently “gone woke”.
THAT’s funny!!!
The article about bitboy, the crypto king who lost all his money and his lamborghini made me cry big ol' splish-splash tears - of laughter
When did the Repos decide that salt of the earth small family farmers are "peasants" again? This seems to go against their alleged "values"
(“personality disorder” doesn’t just mean “she’s a B”).
I’m pretty sure she is a B, though.
I never read tabs. I just came in here to see the cartoon. *V*
"The Gallatin County Republicans want you to watch out for Marxists, transes, and … “peasant families.” Fucking peasants! "
Well, they're not even bothering to update the language in the Blood Libel anymore...
I did not think it possible that I would become even less interested in going on a cruise than I was before I read that article.
A friend of mine went on their first cruise and on the opening night dance a guy dropped dead right mid dance. 2 other people died on the ship that week.
Whoa! Cruise of the Damned!
No costumes! BOO!
And no weed

That Tracy Chapman performance is great, but my favorite is still from 1992’s Bob Dylan Tribute Concert. She killed it…

Yes -- Farmers' Market and the resulting traffic nightmare is every Saturday.
Well, my ballot just got a little easier this morning, after reading this:

Thanks, judge guy, for your 19 crimes. I'm sorry, my dude, but the only 19 crimes I'm supporting is being pushed by Snoop Dogg, and comes in a bottle.
