As a male who has dragged my career ass out of bed every morning for the past 30 years, I would like to state unequivocally that I would have no problem being a kept man.
She's on the cusp of legitimate insight when she's talking about the pressure to 'succeed', have a career, etc., and how this can be damaging. But it's all of us, and the planet, that are at risk. Not just women.
I like how having other options is the same as "destroying traditional values." Does absolutely everybody need to act exactly the same for traditional values to survive? If so, then have a chat with Molly Pitcher or Annie Oakley, both of whom destroyed traditional values in their centuries. Or a Viking warrior princess, of which there many. Or Queen Esther, who destroyed traditional values in the Bible. Or Enhuduanna, the earliest known writer by name, who composed religious texts in Mesopotamia. Yeah, Ur probably fell because of feminism.
We see it every day in articles online, in movies, in the shows that we stream. Every message we get in this modern hustle culture, outside of our religious communities and our own intuition, tells us to throw real purpose out the window in favor of what amounts to a careerist grind.
Movie and tv shows don’t inform people what to do with their lives. It’s generally a reflection of the culture that already exists. There were people like Will and Grace before Will and Grace. And there were fulfilled working mothers before there were shows about them.
Ya know what's weird to me is these "tradwives" who continue to use their maiden name. If she's Ben's sister shouldn't she be Abby Shapiro Roth? Same with Sarah Huckabee Sanders. It's one thing to be all subservient to your husband, but then to keep a maiden name because it has a connection to something prominent is a big FU to that.
I am not against women using their maiden name professionally, but when these paragons of anti-feminism are doing it, doesn't that undercut their argument?

There is not a single working mother out there who believes this or is even allowed to believe this. It’s why women are exhausted. Full time employment plus the physical and emotional labor of caring for children and maintaining a home, which we all know women still carry the majority of the burden for providing, and being judged by society constantly on how well you’ve done?
I was an at home parent until my youngest hit first grade and I loved it. Not due to some biological imperative or religious edict, but because I love working with children AND I was valued for the work. Something that was missing in the “good old days” she’s trying to reimpose on women. When what you do to contribute to your family and your broader society is undervalued (because it’s not compensated) dismissed and demeaned with digs about “women’s work” etc, you’re going to feel like shit about it.
Maybe fix that, Abby. Instead of shitting on women, shit on a society that says caregivers are less important than bankers.
