In 2001, Ross Douthat predicted that he would become one of the "25 richest writers of the future", and then went on to become a film critic for the National Review. Ross Douthat is a walking sad trombone.
Dom brings us images of truth when we're all inundated with polarized crap and AI slop. A true photojournalist, like Dom, knows what the reality is and photographs that versus the lede photo clickbait. As always, well done.
Why doesn't anybody ask ex-Democrat Haley Stevens a question along the lines of: "Who offered you how much to get you to betray all the people who voted for you over the years?" Or, as someone once put it, "What profiteth one to sell his soul to the devil, motherfucker?
Ta, Dom. Great photos and commentary, as always. We are not afraid. We are not alone. We are all in this together. Beloved husband and I have already done our civic duty; we voted in person early here in NY. Today, we're taking out the trash (literally and, let us hope, figuratively), pre-recording an hour long A Jet Age Sound for broadcast on Radio Catskill November 9th, and cooking. I'm making frittata; he's making French onion soup, all vegan of course. VOTE!!
Yep. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. I've given up trying to understand it. I pay, just not through Substack (as do several others who are routinely locked out, not to mention non-subscribers who are paywalled out).
Listen. If Israel/Netanyahu/Likud had not allied themselves with Trump and MAGA and developed an "alliance" based solely on historical and political loyalty, they might have had to modify their behavior and not committed the war crimes that lost whatever support it had in the US and maybe been able to keep funding for weapons to defend itself. But no. They tied the MAGA albatross around their necks, went whole hog into war criming and now that MAGA is in its death throes they get nothing.
I was going to post this on the 60 Minutes post, but it's locked.
I have had it up to past here with the bullshit about "How are we going to pay for the extravagance of Health Care?"
What the fuck do you think is happening now? Is Healthcare brought by Santa Claus? Do the Jolly Little Elves give it to us? Do you think it's free now?
Apparently people who have always had a job where their employer pays for their health insurance think it's free, or maybe $40/paycheck? My father thought that. He was a professor all his life and got phenomenal healthcare coverage. I told him what I paid through the Individual Market, being self-employed, and he didn't believe me. I went and got the fucking premium bill and the declarations page of my policy and it blew his mind, how much I paid for such shitty healthcare coverage.
There is no universe in which simply opening up Medicare to everybody doesn't bring down the cost of healthcare coverage by a lot. By at least 20%. Simply due to the private insurance companies' 30%-40% overhead costs compared to Medicare's 10%-20% overhead.
You don't keep buying a private health insurance policy when you're on Medicare. A supplemental policy or two, sure. And contrary to Republican belief, we use the same US Dollars to pay private bills as we do to pay taxes. We have to earn them all from somewhere. When our employers pay $2500/month for our family coverage, that's $2500 in our total compensation cost that we never see. If we were all on Medicare, and got that much of a raise, there is no way our Medicare tax would go up that much.
The oblivious privilege of people who have never paid for their own health insurance is infuriating.
The Michigan election reminds me a lot of the Mamdani one. None of the scare tactics moved the needle. If anything they helped Mamdani by making him a more sympathetic and honest figure. I think most people hate the fearmongering attack ads.
I am tentatively hopeful while still not discounting extreme election fuckery by the Trump administration and all of the festering anuses that support him in every state.
We are voted aqui!!!
Just got a notification they received my ballot that I dropped off at the drop box last night. Woo hoo!
For the 60 Minutes post:

Sure wish I could post this on Gary's Douthat thread.

It's been an hour so, maybe the thread literally isn't meant for the unwashed,
It's annoying when one is a paid subscriber, but not the right kind (I subscribe via PayPal).

Hurray for me, for I have DONE the THING.
YAYS!
You lost your virginity?
CONGRATULATIONS!
I was hoping to do Morticia, but I wouldn’t want to get between her and Gomez.
Unless you *really do* want to get *in between* her and Gomez. wink wink wink wink
We're dedicating the entirety of tonight's show to your *ahem* "achievement." William F. Buckley Jr. and Jackie Chiles will be guest hosting.
Cool, I can do my “gargling God and Man at Yale” act.
A little old fashioned, eh?
He's a gentleman, after all.
The 60 Minutes story comment section is paywalled.
For some, but not others. Weird.

More Trump BS. Funding for Israel is good through 2028.
If Eiseonkot allies with Arab parties and the Dems take over today, it may be a whole new deal anyway.

Freakin elves, man. They never come through in the clutch.
They make some tasty cookies, though. I'll hand that to them.
"Party Over Country" is the GOP motto.
How come court cases take ten years unless Trump wants something, and then it takes ten minutes?

OT: Anybody else getting a popup on the Interview post saying "Only Paid Subscribers can comment on this post."
Yes. I have.
The box wasn't checked by the author before posting, as happens.
I figured it was something like that, not that my non-comment was anything special.
Yes, they need to change a setting.
