Of course, it's because Dems still believe there's a particular sequence of words - a perfect logical argument - that will finally break through Republicans' defenses and provide incontrovertible, undeniable truth that must be responded to.

I always interpreted that word as "argument for the sake of argument," i.e. using the format of debate without regard for veracity.
