My brother voted for Trump in 2016 but told me he wouldn't in 2020. Of course, that was after the leopard ate his face, and I still have my doubts about his wife. We still manage to be civil. I tell him I'll give him a pillow for the cart on the way to the guillotine because I love him.

The depressing illogic is that he’s been a rock-ribbed conservative Republican for decades. But he goes against Trump and he might as well be a gay trans feminist socialist Muslim atheist.

This brought some stuff up for me. In my case, it was a family member sending a bonkers anti-Bill Clinton email back in the 90s, which helpfully let me and the other 100 people on the chain know that, among other things, Vince Foster was murdered rather than suicide.

My blistering point by point reply in the heat of the moment did not go over well and we did not speak again for years.

This stuff is heart breaking.

There’s a new community-supported agriculture service that has the same name as Glenn Danzig’s first band. “I got something to say, I ate your produce today, doesn’t matter much to me as long as it’s fresh...”

Kinzinger now has a personal experience with radically abusive people targeting him and suddenly learns why you don’t automatically feel the urge to forgive and unify. Bravo.

My mom’s side of the family are Jerry Springer Show on rocket fuel. The few rational family members would frame a letter like that to laugh at during parties. Being disowned by these people is practically a Nobel Prize for Congeniality.

I know it’s drastically different when you receive a letter like that for being LGBTQ. I don’t mean to marginalize that experience. My family are universal abusers and don’t target any specific demographic.

And that is now firmly lodged in my head.

This is telling: the Republican voters vote Republican not for lower taxes but because it’s anti black, anti immigrant and anti gay. They vote this way because they are anti abortion and anti Muslim. They’re not “for” anything. Trump was the face of their rage. They could give a fuck about trickle down economics. They feel Trump was true representation because he spoke to them, for them and like them. When a Republican goes against their cult leader, despite his voting record, he’s no longer welcome in their clubhouse.

Looking at the dynamics of the Big Lie play out recently, I think the conspiracy theories regarding President Clinton made the baseless claims, like Whitewater or firing the travel office or getting a $400 hair cut on Air Force One that delayed air traffic at LAX by four hours* seem reasonable in comparison.

*Since not everything was online in 1993, when conservative media started screeching about the “four hour” delay there was no way to fact check them in real time. George Stephonopolus, the then Press Secretary, got bombarded by questions on this the next day. Some enterprising person looked up flight logs, and found the delays consistent with delays caused by Air Force One at any airport, which was around 20 minutes. But that took six weeks, and the news moved on.
