"...Wouldn’t it make more sense to say, hang out in the Gulf of America...?"

Gulf of Mexico. Don't give this asshole the satisfaction.

Trump has plenty of time to terrorize people in the United States, declare war on Colombia and Venezuela, but has no time or energy to help defend Ukraine from Russian aggression. That (among other things) tells me that Trump is a Russian asset, and everything he does is at the direction of Vladimir Putin. He is a Russian asset. A Communist spy and operative and is dedicated to destroying the United States. If you support Trump, you, too, are working for Russia and Putin, and could be (in my mind) a traitor to this nation and agree to have us dismantled while Trump sets us up to be a client state of Russia. Look around you. Has Trump done one thing to help the people of this nation? I haven't seen one positive thing. He is out to destroy us. Period.

"Why does Trump really want to take over Venezuela? Why did he want to take over Canada? Or Greenland? Who knows."

We know.

It's the oil. The minerals.

The resources he wants to hog for self and share with Putin.

And the brown people they can murder is of course always a bonus to white nationalist terrorists.

We know what he wants from Canada and Green land - control of the Arctic. Not many years until the Arctic Ocean is open year round, and no way is the US going to just let a bunch of barely-countries, (in his estimation), have control of that waterway.

I'm not sure I like this use of Gulf of America without the benefit of irony quotes of irony italicizing. It smacks of normalization. There's this guy I know, more than an acquaintance but somewhat less than a friend. He was an Army Ranger (so he says) and is a retired state police lieutenant (bonafide) and is now living in the redneck riviera. Apparently where he is now is handy to an AF Base and he can hear the F-somethings firing up at night and his wife asked him what that noise is and he replied "it's the sound of freedom." He's the kind of guy who says Gulf of America without the irony. Ya know, morons.

America can’t fix its bridges but somehow finds the budget to blow up fishermen in international waters. The empire always runs out of empathy before it runs out of bombs.

Admirals retire when conscience outweighs the pension. Presidents call it patriotism when they rename greed “national interest.”

There is no cease fire anywhere. Trump makes a big deal out of solving a problem, and then when it falls through, he goes quiet and searches for another issue he can take credit for that which either never materializes ("in two weeks") or flares up again. Even his stooges are infected with that claptrap ("just wait til 2026. This country will be the best ever"), The good things never materialize but the bad things multiply like rabbits. Con man, Liar, Crook.

Or you'll get Iran, in which case the CIA cheerily overthrew a democratically-installed government(1), crammed in a dictator and propped up (training and supplying) his truly vicious secret police, and was later overthrown (26 years later(2)) and replaced with whom, for darn good reason, call the USA "The Great Satan".

Not to mention pretty much all of the smaller Central American countries that had some American corporation (Usually United Fruit) objecting to those countries' governments insisting on the most trivial little worker protections and fair pay for their exports (fruit, but guess what - also oil).

---

1) Because that democratically elected government had the sheer audacity to re-negotiate contracts imposed by force upon the Iranians by global oil companies. Blood for oil goes back a long way.

2) And, oddly enough, the CIA is very proud of having done that, as documented in the book "Legacy of Ashes". The old CIA vets (those that are still around at the time) were still back-slapping each other about "Yep, we pulled off a real good coup there. Yay us!". One has to imagine that the younger generation of blood-thirsty asshats are just longing for another coup like that - and let the long-term consequences be damned.

War increases the USA's GDP.

Regret's avatar

Literally anything increases the GDP. GDP is a useless measure. You could set up two shell companies each with a computer that automatically trades the same amount of money for "services" by the other company a thousand times a minute and you'd inflate GDP by however much you want.

Real increase in gdp is in fact a measure of increase in a country’s output of resources. For example US war with another country leads to an increase in mining, metal refining to weapons and the all the parts of the war machine, increasing the gdp. Call it something else if you prefer but the measurement of increase and loss is not useless.

I could create the same increase with my proposed two companies consisting of one computer each. Did you even think through that thought experiment or did you just reflexively defend the nonsense spewed by economists?
