Progress. Community. Hope.

Sorry, but that's not how we do things down here.

This is great, but it would be even greater if Canada (and everyone else, for that matter) also started dialing back on fossil fuel production.

Republicans: that’s ridiculous. Everyone knows there’s no sun in Canada.

Just Have A Think (youtube channel) just released an interesting episode that's kind of a nice time.

TL;DR - The money men in banks, insurance companies, brokerages etc. are noticing the difference between what scientists mean by "conservate estimate" and what an actuary means by it. To a scientist, they play it on the low side or average many studies and try not to create panic. An actuaries' conservative estimate looks at "what's the worst case scenario" and that's what they plan to address.

So when scientists average out and say "we could be looking at 2C warming by 2100" an actuary looks at the data and sees the higher estimates run all the way to 5 degrees. And major institutions are starting to see that their fiduciary responsibilities call for responding to that estimate.

National security experts in the Pentagon and Langley have been working those forecasts for a number years, too. Even our democrats tend to ignore them. But if .... no, when big money takes it seriously we'll see a real acceleration in prevention and remediation.

Having had a green socialist governor here in Mexico City (yeah, we're a state, not a city... confusing since the state of Mexico is next door, in the country of Mexico) ... who incidentally will in all likelhood be the President next year by this time... we're already on the micro-grid path. The roof of the Centro de Abastos (central wholesale market), one of the largest buildings in the Americas, is covered in solar panels, and as city markets are being upgraded, they too are starting to become micro-generation plants.

where the govt of the state or country is proving intractable, smaller grassroots 'screw you we're going to do this' initiatives will be the saving of us

not that that is what happened here, i mean in general

I just like Canada more and more, frankly.

Not only is it beautiful and significantly more palatable politically, but there's good outdoor fuckin' to be had.

As a Canadian, I can confirm. Including one very memorable occasion on the shores of Maligne Lake.

There goes Canada again, proving you can have nice things if you’re not gerrymandered by Republicans with oil money stuck up their ass.

We would have more Nice Things in Maine if it weren't for Versant (solely owned by Calgary) refusing to hook up solar panels, and Hydro Quebec fucking around with our energy politics.

Alberta just raised its ass to say an oil-friendly hello.

When communities that have suffered heinous, carbon-fueled destruction and then subsequently rebuild utilizing clean, renewable energy and unequivocally demonstrating that it CAN be done my black little heart absolutely soars.

We can do this, comrades. We HAVE to; a happy ending is also within our respective reach.

"Not that it’ll be easy, but there are so many exciting developments out there, and smart people working on all of it, that I’m feeling a lot more hopeful than in the last couple decades."

hey, maybe we'll get a Ministry for the Future without having to boil Frank first.

Not Frank Talk, Action Pundit! I won't hear of it!

The mentality of a society that has no problems with the occasional BLEVE in the middle of a populated area is frankly, inexplicable.

Meanwhile, wtf are we supposed to make of this?

Instead of gathering momentum, the industry is confronting obstacles that could hinder its ability to realize the renewable resource’s promised benefits

Democrats in Disarray Electric Boogaloo.

Article ends with this quote from some asshole.

"The public is turning very sour on this because they’re realizing just how expensive offshore wind is,” said Jonathan A. Lesser, an economist affiliated with the conservative Manhattan Institute who is a critic of offshore-wind development."

Fucking typical.

One tiny mistake and the people of Lac-Mégantic turn their backs on fossil fuels. For shame! Fossil fuels were there in the family car when your dear mum went to to hospital to give birth. Fossil fuels were heating your old grade school. They were even there in your dad's BBQ. Let's not do anything rash.
