I think this editorial might be a little ill-informed. It appears the author agrees with Donald Trump that’s it’s all “HOAX.”
Nobody knows what will happen with AI because a “creature” with immense power has never just been created, then told “go, evolve, learn, and do what you think is best.”
The non-zero chance of AI really hurting the human species comes not from intent: AI has no morality and judgement, it only has mimicry and data. The data comes from a human assigning a task to AI, as is very common now; and through the pursuit of accomplishing that task or making the process more efficient… it hurts people.
For example, not a techbro, just a greedy everyday, computer-saavy, college kid inputs the command, “Make me more money.” We mostly all have probably seen, with Gemini or ChatGPT, how specific you sometimes must be with them, to get them to understand a concept. In the pursuit of money, does the AI in our example use the legal systems in place to make more money? Does it use a data-driven task to accumulate a little money, then, I don’t know invest it in it stock or bitcoin or something like that?
OR does it ignore human ethics completely to make money? Does it use deception on other AI? Does it game a system like a Las Vegas casino?
And now what if an AI is designated with a task during war? Say the firing of missiles to destroy the opponent’s munitions. What if the AI misunderstands or misinterprets its command. Instead of a pinpoint strike against a storage facility nearly vacant of people (as was the intent), it destroys the entire block the munitions building was on?
These tech bros love their money and their god-complexes, but AI has a lot of potential to hurt or kill a lot of people because the people using it are so fallible. I’m by no means an expert.
The thing I don’t get is that all you have to do is not connect these AI programs to anything that can kill us. Could they manipulate other people into killing us? I guess. But people in charge have been doing that throughout mankind.

What makes contemporary so-called ‘artificial intelligence’ dangerous is mostly human illusions about the technology.
It should never have been called that. At best it’s barely that, maybe if you think stuff like an ant is intelligent (kinda, sure), but it is a decent enough mimic in some circumstances people get crazy ideas about its capabilities.
Allowing it to run certain systems is simply incredibly dangerous. It’s fast and makes incredibly dangerous mistakes.
There are benefits and applications. Semi autonomous weapon systems are irresistible in some circumstances—fast and dangerous if you’re Ukraine and you’re being invaded is going to be a chance you’re willing to take.
Regardless, putting it in a system that can hurt people is like playing Russian Roulette with a machine gun attached to a Markov chain text generator.

If humans stopped working on AI tomorrow it would cease to exist.
Its often helpful to replace "AI" with "really complicated software".
That really helps as a more grounded framing to the whole question.
