This is the situation where projection is a positive thing.

My prison pen pal did say the women she was imprisoned with were just like the ones she encountered at the bank or the post office when she was free.

Followup: What's the best way to lead? By example, like @Rooster Cogburn105 did.

Absolutely. Salaries for teachers in the system where I taught started at $28k.

"staff appear to accept the high level of violence and sexual abuse in ADOC as a normal course of business"-- so does most of Christian America, apparently. People suck.

Okay, someone rummaging through your house is not the same level of offense as someone who has kidnapped a teenage girl, kept her in the trunk of a car, and raped her multiple times. I had BOTH types of offenders in my classes when I taught in juvenile corrections.

Non-violent offenders can be placed in supervised community-based settings where they complete community service and receive on the job training that leads to future employment. They do not need to be in maximum secure settings which exposes them to violent offenders. They are still human beings and as people who value life, we must value and protect every life.

Seems like other "civilized" countries have managed to make their prison systems work without them becoming medieval torture chambers. Maybe we should adopt their approach to criminal justice and incarceration.

I agree completely. One is vastly worse than the other.

It might be noted as well that at this point it's likely that most property crime is fueled by the drug epidemic, or at least it is in the northern fringe of Appalachia where I live. What we really need is integrated treatment for these offenders.

Yeah, I reckon I am.

Cause it seems to me like some folks out there have figured this shit out, figured out health care, figured out how to have nice things, and we ought to put aside our toxic pride and try to get those nice things here too.

Anyone remember "Oz," a series on HBO set in a maximum-security prison?

It was well written and had a great cast, but one of the things that annoyed the shit out of me about that show is how the staff ignored prisoner-on-prisoner rape and other violence. One situation in particular involved a soft, pudgy "fish" who was in for killing a little girl while driving drunk. His roommate (J.K. SImmons) was an ultraviolent hardcase who raped him regularly. The prison staff would hold discussions on how to make this guy stop seeing himself as a victim but didn't even acknowledge that he was being raped, much less do anything about it.
