Expand. The. Fucking. Courts. It's the only way. Laws that blatantly and egregiously violate the Constitution? Doesn't matter, because the pet rocks on the circuits and SCOTUS will just uphold them.
If you remember, in the middle of the last decade several states were passing what were called ag-gag laws, promoted by ALEC. These set steep fines and even jail time for recording mistreatment of animals at meat processing plants, pollution from hog and chicken farms, and even misuse of chemicals in cropland. A few states ruled it violated the first amendment but as far as I know it is still in effect in some states. So if you suspect mistreatment of animals and get a job at a poultry plant and record it the owner can sue you for thousands if dollars. If you have drone video of a farmer discharging hundreds of gallons of hog crap into a stream leading to a river cities rely in for drinking water, the farmer can sue you for exposing him.
In North Carolina the law was so bad that the Republican governor, Pat McCrory, vetoed it. But the GOP legislature overrode the veto. A federal judge later ruled parts of it were unconstitutional. But only after the appeals courts sent it back saying you are an idiot, reconsider this decision. One of several times they did this with that particular judge.
People have no idea, seemingly, how sneaky and dangerous ALEC is even as some of us have been writing about them & their literally evil and rapacious intentions since 2016 if not before.
It should be noted that the original proposed route for DAPL was closer to a city (Grand Forks? I don’t remember which one).It was rerouted through native land because they expected less resistance.
There already is a pipeline. It runs thru Lake Michigan near the Mackinaw Bridge. It's called Line 5 and the copany that runs it want to build a tunnel around the pipeline. There is no good reason to run an oil pipeline thru the largest aquifer in the world.
Hey, the oil will help lubricate the water, making it easier to get it to the taps.
ALEC and the legislators who love it should DIAF.
And then water it down or scuttle it themselves as well
Winner winner you get dinner. 🥭.

Let's hope that's the way it goes (as well as continue to urge others to do the right thing who SHOULD know better).

We're nice; we play by the rules.
And where does that get us?
Rules mean nothing to the wingnuts
Time to fight back
