They're not smart enough to be anything but bigoted and hateful.

We used them in martial arts class. Primarily, we were an internal Chinese martial arts studio, but we also dabbled in western boxing, "East Village Sumo" and other stuff. We used colored chalk on those silver rubber knives, and attacked and defended. Long story short, all of us got "hurt." Good lesson.

In first grade, I was at a distinct disadvantage. We'd just moved to the 'burbs, and every kid in class had been in kindergarten together, with the same teacher (it was the year she moved up to first grade). There was a bigger kid who'd been left back, so he didn't know the class or the teacher either. If I'd known then what I know now, I'd have made him my bodyguard and tutored him.

The teacher hated me because I knew how to read. When I told her I'd gotten a library card at two, she called me a liar and sent home a note for my parents. Of course, they confirmed my "story." She recommended attendance at a private school. They demurred. They were buying a house and wanted me to socialize. I didn't. I was smarter than everyone, shorter than everyone, and Jewish. It wasn't legal to skip a grade in Mercer County NJ. I wanted to go back to Brooklyn (or Jersey City or even Bridgeport or Linden) so badly.

Wow, a thoughtful article, thanks. I can't decide whether the Brit project's effect on Muslim kids or the no nothings in the comments were scarier.

Unfortunately we also have our all Muslims are evil section of society.

The actions of the more radical Muslims doesn't help. It's as if there is a fundamentalists playbook that says "if we are big enough arseholes, we can get people to hate the majority of Muslims who are perfectly normal, then they'd have to join us". The Pakistani community doesn't help itself by keeping them selves cut off. Sihks Hindus and the afro-carribean communities are all far more integrated. The very small ultra-orthadox Jewish community does appear to have a high arseholes quotient, but even when reported on that doesn't get nearly the same amount of attention.

Part of the problem is we don't have your luntic Christian mainstream: they are there but small and by and large invisible. If a story about creationist teaching breaks, then the problem seems to get stamped on quickly. With no Christian luntics to compare against, its easy for the uninformed to assume all evil=Islam
