Good story, but I feel it lacked schadenfreude.

Not that Canada is some utopia - has problems like most places - but this kind of blatant political award/punishment use of essential emergency public services is not only unheard of, it's laughable.

The Republicans have been doing this shit since Nixon (yes, the common thread from there to here is Roger Stone). Nixon's whole excuse for Watergate and all his other ratfucking, dirty tricks and spying was that Kennedy stole the 1960 election from him and he'd better do something to the Democrats because he was certain they would do something worse to him. The persecution complex has a long history with these creeps.

OT:

Budgie had a Lonch Accident after she eated her leftover veggie chimken sammich from yesterday.

It tasted good in Budgie tummy, but then, uh, it Made A Reappearance.

So Budgie is going out to buy new earbuds. She lost her other ones.

As anyone knows, the only way to find what Uue already lost is to go and buy another one.

I killed that aphorism about finding what you lost - or at least wounded it - yesterday. Searched *everywhere* for lost item. "Oh, I bet I left it at work. Nope. On the way from work to buy a new one: "Maybe I'll look at home just once more." At home: "Yay, here it is under the stuff I piled on top of it!"

Works 100% of the time. :D

At this point Blue States are in an abusive relationship.

When in charge Republican leadership says fuck Blue States and doesn't even care if people in those states die due to lack of relief funding after disasters.

When in charge Democratic leadership also puts Red States first because they are hoping that will get Red States to change and be nicer to them.

Liberal democracy is under an existential threat from so many different but in some ways, connected, channels; the global shit-stirrers like Putin, the broligarchy, the Jesus freaks, the nihilists and the stupid people who fall for their shit.

So that's what the kids are calling it these days? I'm game!

“In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men.

Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.”

-Captain G. M. Gilbert, the Army psychologist assigned to watching the defendants at the Nuremberg trials

Very enlightening, and enlightened, thought. Especially now, where the fad on the Right is to decry empathy itself as the greatest threat facing "Western Culture," which is what they consider themselves to be.

Too brutally, entirely accurate.

Sorry, centrist Wonkers, but defending Fetterman just keeps getting more difficult. Reprehensibility does not equal electability.

Birb is listening to some gorgeous music on WMNF.org. I believe the song was "Ride On, King Jesus."

Such a great vocal. Sounded female. Singer's name wasn't on the screen.

Seriously, pop over there and give a listen sometime. Their stuff is *funnnnn.*

Inside the failed mission to eliminate FEMA

"Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the country's top disaster agency. In the first week of his second term, he attacked FEMA, saying, "I think, frankly, FEMA is not good," arguing that the agency should be eliminated. That rhetoric was echoed by top administration officials, including then-Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, who controlled the agency's budget."

I saw that diesel gas is up to $6/gallon. Normally, things her in Central OK are cheaper than national averages, but OK owned Love's had it listed for $6.09. OnCue had it for $5.47, as did eExpress. Not sure what is going on with Love's.

I filled up for $3.43 with my $0.10 Walmart discount. The discount has recently increased from $0.05, double saving! $1/tank is pretty good. Definitely more than $50 per year.

Parakeetist's avatar

Oh wow, do you have a diesel car?

Teen Laqueefa's avatar

I had a VW Dasher diesel back in the 80's that got close to 60 MPG, if I still had that car I'd be driving fucking everywhere.

"The Federal Emergency Management Agency is no longer in the Trump administration's crosshairs, according to its former leader. In recent months, the fear of wholesale agency abolition or mass layoffs has dissipated among FEMA workers, according to multiple current FEMA employees who requested anonymity because they fear retaliation for speaking to a journalist. But the attempts to kill it have compounded some of FEMA's longstanding problems, like understaffing and delays in getting disaster recovery money to survivors."

Stephen Austin and the beginnings of Texas.

Seems Americans were treated as immigrants to the Mexican province.

When Mexico had Texas, they wanted more people to move there because they thought it was too sparsely populated. So they invited Americans in, which they did, and they brought their slaves with them (legal in both nations at the time). However, Mexico abolished slavery before the United States did, and that's what kicked off the Texas rebellion. Well, it wasn't the only problem that American Texans had with the Mexican government at the time, but it was the biggest one.
