I can't recommend that Kurt Eichenwald thread enough. He really breaks it down for those of us for whom lists of figures and corporate-speak make our eyes glaze over
The sad thing is white wealthy folks get caught up in stuff like this all the time, and it’s nearly impossible for the govt to prove intent to defraud
The only thing that’s going to happen is a few days of court headlines. Everyone in lord will be found innocent, and at the most, they will ha e to pay back taxes & fines on what they owe
They didn’t defraud other wealthy people, which means they are going to skate free
The bonus for them, is that Rrump will use this as a way to stay relevant & in the news.
If I knew anyone who’d say “This is all just because he was President,” I would say “This is proof he never should have been President.”Thank God I don’t.
If getting jailed for tax evasion is good enough for Al Capone, it’s certainly good enough for the Trump criminal empire, who, honestly, seem about a third as clever as Capone.
I also lol that Trump was a cheep enough bastard to require those “not for federal eyes” spreadsheets of pay deductions of all those undeclared perks. If the cheepness is the thing that ultimately dinks him, that would certainly be some Karma in action.
1.76 million, especially to maintain a lifestyle in NYC, isnt a lot of money at all to risk 15 felony charges over- ESPECIALLY when it’s just stolen tax money and isn’t costing the Trumps a thing.
GOSH! I wonder what else is kept off of the official books but is still noted in a separate tally…..
Fun fact: Rudy Jools put Leona Helmsley in prison for doing essentially this.
Guy defrauded the local, state, and fed tax system of over a million dollars, and helped his employers cover it up for him and others. The prosecuters have the paperwork.
The company can't claim they didn't know about the apartments. Occupancy rates for commercial/residential real estate are everything. That's how you attract buyers, that's how you negotiate financing. If they thought it was empty, they would sell it. The Weisellbergs weren't squatters.
The thread is all about the implications of providing falsified documents to the lending agencies. It’s huge and very worth a read (which is why Evan linked to it).
While no one knows what the outcome of these indictments will be, it is not quite accurate to suggest that white wealthy folks don't get indicted, prosecuted, convicted, and imprisoned, on a regular basis, for tax evasion. Don't take my word (as a white-collar prosecutor) for it: google "us doj press release tax evasion" for a rogue's gallery of doctors, lawyers and businessmen who thought they were the smartest guys in the room. Of course a lot of folks get away with it in the world at large, but very few who are unlucky enough to be indicted get acquitted. Based on the indictments, I would expect substantial prison time even on a plea.

Let the witch hunt headlines begin

Nice Times!!!! Thanks, Evan!!!!!!!! https://media2.giphy.com/me...
I thought Evan laid it out pretty clearly.
Evan absolutely did as well.
That thing about recieving receiving income by disguised means is one of the things they put my father in prison for.

Thanks go to Weisselberg's (ex) daughter in law, who handed over a bunch of papers to the government. I guess she was tired of the family's shit.

"furniture shopping". Chefs kiss Evan.
Ta, Evan. Furniture shopping for the win!
how could they not have intended to defraud, given that they kept correct books internally and filed bullshit taxes?
