It's remarkable to me that the Egyptian military has largely filled the role of the adult in the room for so long. Maybe they've been collectively sorry about offing Sadat, but my own theory is that they just want shit to WORK.

On principle, I cannot support military-assisted regime change. Oh, wait, this being the Fourth, does 1776 come to mind? The ideal government is a properly representative scheme, with protection for minority rights. Maybe on this try Egypt will get closer than Texas. Who knows.

I think one reason this coup has strong popular backing is that the Muslim Brotherhood engineered the election a year ago to occur way too soon. None of the other nascent political parties had had the chance to establish themselves. Unlike the Brotherhood, they were not well-known; they had no money and little infrastructure. By forcing the date of the election, the Brotherhood ensured it would win. Last year some people were calling the action a kind of coup.

The Egyptian military is not to be trusted--they are out to protect their privileged position, as the NYT pointed out this morning. But In this instance they seem to have come down on the right side. In 1974 the military in Portugal overthrew Salazar, backed by popular support, without a shot fired--the Carnation Revolution. The military governed for nearly a year until proper elections could be held. It's a hopeful model.

This is my reason for not being all Oh Noes! Military coup! The Muslim Brotherhood promised to govern in a balanced way and then set about reshaping the new constitution. And the election that put them in power was rushed through so that other, newer parties would not have time to prepare and campaign. So fuck that.

On the one hand, staging a coup can't be good for such a young democracy, with now the permanent threat of military intervention. On the other hand, the new constitution was heading in a very undemocratic direction, so perhaps it's as well that it was nipped in the bud and can now be replaced.

I totally cheated on Wonkette today with Al Jazeera.

My comment even got upvoted to the <a href="http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2013\/07\/20137319828176718.html" target="_blank">top of the page</a>.

I completely ignored the American wingnut xtards, because sparring with the arabic wingnuts was far more interesting. I was fascinated by the fact that you can change just one or two religion specific words, and these people could be any commenter at WND. Why these people hate each other strikes me as something as a mystery, they are practically philosophical twins.
