In the 1950s China encouraged large families as a way to strengthen the nation in the future. Hooray! More workers, soldiers and peasants. That plan went off the rails in 1959-1961 when droughts, agricultural policies and industrialization led to lethal famines, aggravated by all those hungry but non-productive children. Between 15million and 45million people died for lack of food. Today's one-child policy arguably helps insulate against the impact of some future famine.
