I’ve lurked on enough right wing sites to deduce that many who approve of these ridiculous projects only do so because they piss off Democrats, and will admit in a moment of candor that they seem wasteful and a distraction from what they think Trump should really be paying attention to, like rounding up more brown people and having his political enemies prosecuted. As for his obsession with glueing gold trim on everything, even his ass-kissing knob polishers think it’s a bit tacky.

Every one of these architectural projects seems to be the bricks and mortar version of what the junta squatting in office at Washington is trying to do to the national culture: namely scrub it of all of its aspirational, humanistic Enlightenment Era features.

And into that vagueness and searching marched a generation of Americans, millions of them held in bondage millions more women who were by law less than fully human, Catholics who were in all but one state barred from holding positions of public power or trust.
But if there's anything that separates the United States and its culture from the rest of the world, or at least did before the election of 2016, it is that a nation is formed around an ideal and that the charge of each generation and of the people that generation elects, is to take steps to approach that that ideal of freedom, and peace ever closer.
These ideas come from the thinkers of the enlightenment era, who were located mostly in Great Britain and France. As a unit, they were hostile to the idea of central control, especially control of ideas. They were suspicious of the Roman Catholic Church and of official state churches, like the Church of England. So they invented the idea of religious freedom, which basically says that a person's religious faith is irrelevant to anything else they do in the public sphere. Thomas Jefferson notably was the author of the ordinance of religious freedom in Virginia, and it basically says that: when it comes to sitting on a jury, being elected to office, to holding or transferring property, in the eyes of the government and of its officials, it doesn't matter what you're doing at sundown on Friday, or 11:00 on Sunday morning.
During the revolutionary war, a government of Pennsylvania did a really shit job of protecting the Continental Congress, meeting there in the Old State House. And when the new constitution was drafted, those old revolution era congressman remembered the danger and stress of their evacuations from Philadelphia. And so included in the Constitution the creation of an independent national capital, that by definition would not be dependent the political clique running the local state house.
The city became known as Washington. And it's design is a miracle, laid out in part by a mathematician and astronomer whose skin was black. The buildings were still constructed by slaves on the orders of whites. But they followed a street grid in which American and French surveyors, all steeped in enlightenment philosophy in their schooling, laid out with artistic precision. Broad avenues for the public between major public buildings. This would be a Greco-Roman Capital, without palaces.. other capital in the world was built around the home of a king and or the mighty fortress where he protected himself from being overthrown. With the people living in its Shadow. Washington is a city that looks not to London or Paris but to a romanticized view of republican Rome and democratic Athens.
And then of course in the mid 19th century that nation was enthralled in a great civil war, testing whether that Nation or any Nation so conceived and dedicated could long endure. Across the Potomac from Washington was the custis-Lee estate. A. Slave pantation. Abraham Lincoln and his administration took it and set it aside as a portion of the Republic where the honored dead could be buried in peace. There is no triumph there. But there is mourning. The cost paid in the blood defeating men who would rather kill than accept that all men are created equal.
Each one of these projects proposed by the current administration squatting in Washington seeks to obscure and deface the noble enlightenment features of the Washington landscape.
The arch serves to hide the view of the grave markers in Arlington. It obstructs the view from the grave markers of the memorial to the slain president who led them, Abraham Lincoln.
To me, all the incompetence around the reflecting pool seem as if they were designed so that that Democratic national pond, the site of so many protests for freedom and Justice, would be ringed by riot fence and patrolled by armed men.
And then the goddam ballroom. It is no accident that it is proposed to dwarf the original president's house. The idea is to plant a monarch's Louvre or Whitehall in the midst of democratic Washington.
Is the criminal majority of the United States? Supreme Court seeks to undo Justice made real since the 1930s, and Congress aborigates it's present responsibilities, these building projects seek in a real way to strip away ideas that existed before the founding of the nation, ideas for which men and women fought and died. Basic ideas, like that each of us is human and have the same blood in our veins, and from that each of us is at base equal, especially before the law.
Architecture is a powerful thing. And it's no wonder they seek to use it to erase foundational ideas that keep our society from collapse. Because it is collapse that they seek.
So the better that they can rebuild it in the ancient form of a human government with the most murderous asshole on top.
