Thank you for my Morning Owl. I love those little birdies! When I was working at the mall, I loved those days when Hawk Creek Wildlife Center, Inc., came with an exhibit. Often accompanying them, was a tiny screech owl. My boss was nice enough to let me go and look at all the stuff - as long as I left my wallet in the store. Hehehe....she didn't check my pockets, tho'.

I live near a park, and when I visit it I often hear owls hooting back and forth to each other.

(Also hear pileated woodpeckers and noisy, complainy hawklings)

Hunting Island State Park in South Carolina is a prime habitat for raptors, most notably the Great Horned Owl and the Barred Owl. These nocturnal birds of prey thrive in the park's maritime forests, coastal marshes, and heavily wooded campground areas.

When our giris were young we camped there and were taken on a nighttime owl watching tour by park rangers it was an experience that they still remember. The next morning we awoke to a hurricane warning. Hurricane Charlie had taken an unexpected turn and was headed our way. We never broke camp so fast in our lives.

One year I would be out side waiting for my ride to pick me up. Living on the edge of town with plenty of forest I could hear a BARRED OWL claim it's territory. The WHO COOKS FOR YOU-WHO COOKS FOR YOU ALL set a pleasent start for the day. LIFE IS GOOD!

Martini Glambassador's avatar

At night I sometimes hear the hoots of an owl that must live nearby my home, but I've never seen her. Still, it makes me happy knowing she's there and also, like yours, probably helping to keep the rodent population in check... although Evie (the cat) is also quite good at that.

Snarfyguy's avatar

Remaining pending SCOTUS decisions:

Mail-in Ballots: (Watson vs. Republican National Committee): At least 29 states count at least some mail-in ballots postmarked on or before Election Day. People vote by mail for various reasons, and the decision could have a sweeping effect on geographically hard-to-reach voters, those with disabilities, or those without access to in-person voting.

Birthright Citizenship: (Trump v. Barbara): The court is reviewing President Donald Trump's executive order on Day 1 that denied automatic U.S. birthright citizenship to children born in America to parents without permanent legal status.

Authority to Fire Fed Members: (Trump v. Cook): When Trump attempted to Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over unsubstantiated claims of mortgage fraud last year, it launched another constitutionality question of whether a president has the unilateral power to not only fire a sitting board member but the limits of presidential authority.

Banning trans women in sports: (Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J.): Whether states can legally bar transgender women and girls from participating in female sports teams.

In the article, Herndon said, "People who pay those taxes also don’t always use the services they’re funding,."

This is such bullshit. My guess is that this is part of a bid to reduce school funding. The GOP wants to shift to all private schools. BUT, fact is the vast majority of residents do use all of the things funded by their taxes. They drive on the roads, get driving-hunting-fishing licenses from the state, use parks and malls and other infrastructure funded by the state. And if you've lived for generations in a home, you've sent generations of children to schools. When you interact virtually anywhere in the state, you are interacting with people who can read, write and do sums so even if you don't have kids in school, you benefit from the education system. You use the hospital system, you probably have elderly relatives receiving community services or in homes, ... .

If pressed, Herndon wouldn't be able to name one single person in Iowa who does not use services provided from the state on a daily basis.

How shall we ensure the nuclear industry is safe? Lemme guess. “The Invisible Hand.” If a company allows its reactor to melt down, the market will destroy that company. That’ll do it.

These techbros are evil, stupid children. They should not be allowed in public without their nannies.

ElderlyLoudCatWomyn's avatar

The Invisible Hand is the most miss-used economic concept ever developed. In Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith specifically developed the concept to apply to a very specific type of economy, where small SMALL, individually owned businesses of approximately equal size competed for the patronage of the local community. Point being that none of the actors in this very limited economy had enough power to direct the economy individually. Prices were set by the market because no one could individually set the price.

What all of these conservative pundits completely ignore is the longish section in Wealth that spelled out the need for unions. Smith said that unions were necessary to redress the imbalance of power between workers and companies. Because companies were large and strong enough to set the price of labor - wages - rather than allowing the market to set wages.

There are other sections in Wealth that also address imbalance of power.

I had her in my arms when she reached out to pet the horse when it loudly snorted. She immediately spun back around and tried to hide in my embrace. My heart melted to know that she felt that I was there for her. One of my lifes unforgettable feelings.

More money appearing in two weeks? Just be patient... while we drain the life force out of our state guv.

It is Idaho, where the real fight is between the libertarians who refuse to see how government assists them most of the time (and then complain about slow emergency reaponse and their failing schools) and psycho ex cops/firefighters from California who are literally retiring on government pensions to move to somewhere where they can "get government off their backs" and think the first group doesn't go far enough. Not a lot of understanding of public and collective goods.

rawrtigerlily's avatar

They’ve been proposing this same dumb shit in Georgia for a couple of years now.

Thankfully we’re close enough to Florida and Alabama to see first hand what life looks like when no one wants to pay taxes to live here.

Yeah, I don’t think a 21% sales tax on everything I buy is going to save me any money (our current sales tax is already as high as Florida’s so it would have to be much higher than it is now) , & it’s certainly less fair to the people who make the least money.
