What about improving the ones for the women so that many of them wouldn’t need to give up the babies in the first place? It’s like pro-natalists thinking they can bribe women into reproducing rather than making parenthood more affordable.
I'm a gay adoptive parent who should have known better than to risk his normally placid blood pressure to read this article because the prejudice started pretty quickly. Our son just today started his senior year, is looking at colleges, working, and becoming an all-around fine young man, so he's doing fine with his dads, thanks.
When you adopt, you learn that there is always loss behind an adoption and that can mean a connection with some biological family members. But you also learn that "mother" and "father" are job descriptions—they're loving work that people do for their kids, whether those people are biological parents, adoptive parents, or just people in kids' lives who love them enough to do that work.
I know this is all beside the point of the article but it always strikes a nerve.
My sister fostered and then adopted two young brothers along with her partner of 15 years, but this was before Obergefell so her partner couldn't be on the paperwork which caused even more pain after my sister died.
I wish every good vibe, love, and joy upon you and all your little family. Americans can be terrible assholes, but we can build up our good things in spite of the assholes if we're brave enough <3
Yup. I have a coworker where she and her husband are looking into adopting. They have put in SO MUCH just to get in the line to be CONSIDERED. We're like over a year of paperwork and background checks in. And within the next year they'll age out of being allowed babies because if one member of the couple is over 40 they don't want to give them the youngest kids.
My take on this has been, you signed the fucking contract. So, if you then veer off, and abscond to Texas, and decide to rip up your obligations, well, I am having a real hard time ginning up any sympathy. Except for the kid: I have sympathy for him.
