Those who are incapable of seeing nuance have had a very hard time processing this whole #MeToo thing. They fear that vicious bands of roving feminists are out to destroy consensual flirting, because, of course, said feminists are so stupid that they cannot discern enjoyable, consensual flirting that is a good time for everyone from sexual harassment. Some
Good argument Robyn.I was absolutely crushed when I learned that "Russ & Roger Go Beyond" (the Russ Meyer/Roger Ebert project you reference) has been cancelled in the wake of the #MeToo movement. As a proud Russ Meyer fan, I was looking forward to seeing a mainstream feature film about him and his unlikely friendship and collaboration with Roger Ebert. Russ Meyer was a very special filmmaker - a true American auteur with a unique style and a gift for creating controversial movies that blended satire, comedy, violence, action, sex, misogyny and sometimes feminism. He was a complicated man and his films are complicated too. Much more complicated than his conservative and radical feminist critics would have you believe. Yes, he became extremely wealthy as an exploiter of sex and in particular, women. But there are nuances to his personality and his films worthy of inspection - something I hoped "Russ & Roger Go Beyond" would explore. Sadly, we won't get to find out how Will Ferrell (cast as Russ Meyer) would portray such an important American icon of independent cinema. This is the core of my lament. Like most people, I fully support the goals of the #MeToo movement to eradicate sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood and elsewhere. But, ironically, if a byproduct of the #MeToo movement in Hollywood is the creation of new censorship and the demise of creative and artistic freedom then we have actually renewed the filmmaking conditions that Russ Meyer set himself against in the 1960s and 1970s! Somewhere Russ Meyer's spirit is looking upon all of this and yearning for the opportunity to get back behind the camera and respond in his inimitable style....
I wouldn't be surprised to find that a ton of movie-goers don't even know what chippendales are, and will bring their tiny children, thinking it's about Alvin and the Chipmunks.
My sister and I went to "Midnight Cowboy" when it first hit the theaters. There were a couple of older ladies in line ahead of us talking about how strange it was that Dustin Hoffman was starring in a western.
I'm late reading this, but a-fucking-men to the whole thing. If some movies that glorify coercive or non-consensual sex don't get made, boo hoo. There are hundreds of films that don't get made every year for much worse reasons. Maybe #MeToo will open up a space for different types of stories that don't rely on the stale old myth that women like being dominated and raped.
Be glad if you've never gotten any (yeah, I know that's not what you meant).
As best I can figure, the logic behind it goes like this: Dude has phone no of chick he totally wants to bang, but isn't 111% certain if she wants to just yet. Dude thinks* 'what would get me in the mood right about now? I know! What if she sent me a full-on beaver shot, damn, that would be HAWT' Small brain thinks, 'Yes! Full-on beaver! We have started your engine, gentleman!' Dude picks up phone, takes pick of said revved-up engine, and clicks Send. Dude sits back to await promised beaver pic & followup nookie.
*'thinking' used in the loosest sense here, as all 'cognition' is performed by the little head.

I, for one, still think Ben Stiller is handsome but I don't see him as a Chippendales' dancer.

ha!
I was hoping for an in-depth documentary of C18th furniture personally...
Why would they think it would work? I dunno, but then, men(#notall) seem to think unsolicited dick pics are just the thing as well, so ..
What this needs is a frank discussion of when and why cruelty is "sexy."
"How is it sexy to watch rape?""What does it say about you that you find it fun to watch someone be humiliated and hurt?"
These are my questions right now.
My sister and I went to "Midnight Cowboy" when it first hit the theaters. There were a couple of older ladies in line ahead of us talking about how strange it was that Dustin Hoffman was starring in a western.
I can't go to movies any more now that they have the big, comfy reclining chairs. I'm asleep shortly after they turn down the lights.

Usually when older people complain about their sex life it's lack of frequency, but she's still getting it on twice a day?
Tura Satana does deserve a biopic! Who's gonna make that film? Thanks, Robyn.
just not one with ben stiller in it, AMIRITE, PEEPLES?!?11?!
Yeah, point taken and (yet) another thing I just don't get and never will get.

Well, he could play a chair leg - I mean he is pretty wooden....
