There's another related problem with that wording. I've seen comments elsewhere about this story that seem to be saying that black students are getting special treatment.
I'm assuming that they are focusing on just that part and then interpreting it as "giving them these opportunities is it's own form of segregation" (but which is acceptable to the people involved because it now favours them).
The blacks were also told about career possibilities in the cotton industry. After the blacks left, the girls were called in to learn about baking great pies, sewing, cleaning the house and giving their husbands numerous babies.
