I think we are genuinely at the point where we have to consider whether Trump has an agreement with Putin to seriously downgrade the US military in exchange for a Trump Tower deal in Moscow after he flees the US...

He's just one of the many poster-children for what's wrong with the corporate-management model as adopted by US Higher Education. In the corporate world, HR departments hire and promote people screened by people who couldn't do the job they're hiring to fill; and don't understand what those jobs really require. This is just an extension of the old "Peter Principle," of why hierarchical authority structures promote mediocrity and tend to failure.
And there's no hierarchical authority structure like the US Military.
The Ivies have always been wildly over-rated, often by their own mediocre graduates who land in cushy elite positions for no clear reason.
And Hegseth, like JD Vance, are their boys. They do well on tests. They are gaping black holes of self-esteem who have figured out how to meet the criteria of course syllabi, without having a single actual thought of their own; and taking their facility with systems as confirmation of their own intellectual acumen.
