Reminds me of the SNL skit from, many years back called "White Like Me" in which Eddie Murphy gets made up as a white yuppie in order to experience what it was really like to be a Caucasian in New York. While shopping in a store he brings merchandise to the register and the clerk bursts out laughing, saying, "What are you doing? Just take it! You don't have to pay for it!"
Used to work at Woolworths in PA, where the store manager's policy was "Watch the darkies!" His words. Actually shouted these instructions on the sales floor in front of a dark couple. His rationale? "Anybody who complains is obviously stealing shit."
I was filled with such loathing at that job, I honestly told one young man, "I'll turn away for about five minutes, and anything you can carry off, you can keep." For some reason, this endeared me to neither customers nor management. I was so damn happy when that place went bankrupt, largely due to lawsuits.
These sorts of situations make white people uncomfortable- it reminds them that things aren't all hunky dory in the exceptional US of A. Trouble is- it's much easier to shoot the messenger and tell them to STFU about a problem than it is to actually roll up your sleeves and do the hard work of fixing said problem
