Observations: The young now resigned officer is likely not suited for policing. So, his resignation is for the better. When you're younger, your testosterone level can rise quickly, more so when someone--a possible felon--is running his mouth when he should keep it closed. You have to keep your cool, no matter what. Especially when you represent law AND order. Good news: he didn't shoot the suspect. he simply kicked his ass the old fashioned way. I suspect McGrier considered himself immune from too much harm, given the prevalence of onlookers and felt free to talk shit. Bad move. The officer played the role of an on the police beat Terrence Crawford pummeling an unprepared opponent into submission with no referee present to stop the fight.McGrier might benefit from both self defense training (you need to cover up better when those blows are raining down on you) and remaining quiet if you consider yourself immune from harm. Oh, and learn to say "Uncle" as soon as you've figured out no one can save you but you.

I have the greatest respect for ER nurses, CPS, PET Team, and other unsung heroes. However, I'm pointing out that it's hard enough to get moderate reforms going in the conservative LEO world, and that cause isn't helped by well-intended, but impractical solutions like unarmed uniformed rookies going out on patrol. They can go on ride-alongs in civvies if they want to observe, like any other citizen.

But they aren't wearing a police uniform, and are generally ordered to retreat from attack. I've dragged psychotics off medical and support staff in interviews myself. I support extended use of LCSW and PET teams, they're great at evaluation of 5150's and non-violent resolution (win-win). I just don't think unarmed rookies in crime situations is going to work, as the FTO will focus on keeping his charge safe instead of watching the suspect;s hands. It's just not going to work, for all the good intentions in the world.

Observing as in being in uniform, unarmed, in a potentially dangerous crime-in-progress situation? Disagreeing does not equal disagreeable, and the evaluation of a proposed solution by someone who has actually done the job is more likely, but not always, to carry more molecular weight than someone, whose, like 95% of the public, LEO experience is limited to TV and movie watching. I refrain from giving pilots tips on flying, myself.

How often in their career is a LEO in the position of defending their own life? Not being snarky. I’m genuinely curious. We don’t hear many stories of police shooting their way out of a dangerous situation. We do hear a lot of stories about police shooting other people.
