Happy Weekend!
Today is National Be An Angel Day, which the internet says is a day to do good deeds and which I say is a day to encourage people to do good deeds for you by saying, like, “Be an angel and bring me a cup of coffee, will ya?” and whatnot.
So, naturally, your first present this week is a clip from Desperate Lives, the after school special in which Helen Hunt takes angel dust and, well, tragicomedy ensues.
It also stars the lady who played Christina Crawford in Mommy Dearest, which is very exciting for me, personally. Weirdly enough the previous year Helen Hunt was in another made-for-tv movie about angel dust, called Angel Dusted (with co-star Edith Bunker!), which I think I am going to have to see.
I also bring you the first episode of Teen Angel, a weird sitcom about a teenager who dies and becomes his BFF’s guardian angel. It was on TGIF for like a year when I guess they were trying to capitalize on the popularity of Sabrina the Teenage Witch or something. Weirdly enough, it was actually created by Simpsons writers Al Jean and Mike Reiss.
And speaking of Sabrina, I’ve also got a clip of what appears to be an extremely hilarious episode of Touched by an Angel featuring Melissa Joan Hart and a young Jack Black, andJack Black is trying to get her to give him five CDs a day like some sort of illicit Columbia House record club? But then she turns into the Touched by an Angel lady?
I never actually watched that show, but now I’m thinking I missed out because that was hilarious. It’s like a Jesus-y The Littlest Hobo, I guess? Who knew!
This next one doesn’t explicitly have anything to do with angels, but it came up when I searched for “angels” on r/ObscureMedia and after watching the first minute I decided that I cannot possibly keep it to myself. It’s a short documentary about a Christian puppetry convention titled, incredibly, Hands of God, and it’s already one of the most cringe things I’ve ever seen in my life.
You are welcome.
Anyway! And if you happen to be in Chicago and looking for some very cool stuff to do this weekend, you should know that tomorrow is the GREATEST DAY OF THE YEAR, and by that I mean that it is Sunday in the Park with Lyric Day! The day (or evening, really) when the Lyric Opera does a free preview of the season, plus some other selections, at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. It is my actual favorite thing, ever.
Also too, my pal, comic Leah Rudick has a show at Zanies in Montrose tonight, which is very dangerously located across the street from the outlet mall.
If you don’t live in Chicago, however, you can catch her on the rest of the tour should you be so inclined.
