I am a history teacher. Ben Carson can go fuck himself.

And once again, I mention that the text we used to use for US history was an American text called The Triumph of the American Nation. While Canadian history texts have names like The Canadian Challenge. Ben would like that text, I'm thinking.

The problem with history is that it is constantly growing. Some schools are lucky if they can get students to WWII, and that's skipping over almost everything that happened from the end of Reconstruction (or even the end of the Civil War) to the Zimmerman Telegram and the sinking of the Lusitania.

Something has to be given short shrift.

Or, instead of joining ISIL, some kids might decide that, 50 years from now, some of our current policies might look bad. They might start voting for peace and equality, and other hippie stuff.

Slavery is not just "a central source of tension of the 19th century," but also the fundamental contradiction at the core of American history, wherein slave-owners wrote so beautifully about freedom, and wiping out Native Americans was only a trivial successor to enslavement of an indigenous people from another continent. Plus Japanese internment, Jim Crow, holding back the Asian hordes in Vietnam, etc.

But of course to recognize this and still love your country, you would have to be able to understand that some things are complicated but still worth learning about.

Which is kinda the whole point of edumacation.

Only two paragraphs about George Washington! Think about it. Washington would have totes owned Ben Carson.

People who know stuff. That is terrifying to some people. (Lookin' at you red states.)

If the wingers are right, Obama is destroying America. So who cares about history.
