The Vikings were here even earlier, but you couldn't really say they "colonized." I'm thinking of submitting a petition to rename Columbus Day "Leif Erikson Day." Neither one was what you'd call an admirable human being by modern standards, but Leif got here more than 400 years earlier, in a much smaller boat, and he doesn't get credit for that.

And at least he was a WASP. Not some damned dark person from southern Europe.

Did you see that another Viking settlement has maybe been discovered in Newfoundland? I'm eagerly waiting to hear if there's any evidence if they were Baptist or Methodist.

How about we trade Columbus Day (genocide day) for a national voting day?

Enh. The northern parts of the Empire of Mexico weren't highly populated by Mexicans. Lots of 'bandits'--native Americans who'd previously owned the land. They were not Mexican. The Mexicans who became Americans due to US conquest weren't that many. More have since immigrated, mostly for jobs, partly out of the notion that the land is Mexico's, since Mexico took it fair and square from Spain, who stole it from the native Americans.

Equating Mexico as the "original owners" is just picking which empire you want to support.

Um, no. I posted this elsewhere last week because I believe people should not repeat misinformation (from NPR):

Edison conducts entrance and exit polling for American elections and has conducted polls on primary voters and caucusgoers in 20 states so far this election.Brown said, by some measures, Sanders actually leads among black and Latino voters."Among African-Americans, who are 17 through 29, Bernie Sanders is actually leading that group, 51 to 48 [percent]," he said. "Among 17- to 29-year-old Hispanics, Bernie Sanders leads Hillary Clinton 66-34."

If you want to find it, you should go to the largest and most respected name in exit polling: Edison Research.

Yes, I saw that last night on PBS. I believe they were Thorites, which sounds like some weird fundamentalist cult, doesn't it??? Or else it sounds like a mouthwash.

It's a holiday I never really understood, as I am 60 years old and never once did I get that day off from school, or from work, so I don't see the point to it. It's just a day when I have to get up at 5:45 to go to work like any other day, and I can't go to the bank or get mail.

Not a bad idea. Personally I'd like a National "Don't Beat Up or Rape Any Women Today" Day. Do you think it would work? Is one day per year too much to ask??? How about a National "Lock Up Your Guns For Just One Day" Day, like the Great American Smokeout day they have.
