Photo by Liz Gorman used with permission. One late summer evening your Wonkette ventured to Manassas, Virginia, to see the hordes gather for a Mr. Senator Bernie Sanders for President rally. Said rally took place at the Prince William County Fairgrounds (yee-haw) a.k.a., a grassy field. It was the same site where, in 2008, then-candidate Barack Obama's once spoke to a crowd of 90,000 optimistic believers, of the great hope and change he would deliver. (Also, rainbows and unicorns, too.) Though this crowd was somewhat smaller, just a few thousand seekers of hope and change (and also rainbows and unicorns), the enthusiasm matched Obama's rally on that crisp night so many moons ago.
Communities in Eastern Oregon were competing against each other to get the newest prison, which was being built as I left corrections education. They're state-run facilities with jobs that start at $20+ per hour, paid vacation, sick leave, health care and retirement. They're also union jobs. Very popular with local conservatives, who feel these jobs replace "the good jobs in the woods that the tree-huggers took from us."Riiight.
Don't worry, Hussar, some of us have been watching Jeremy Corbyn's win. It's been in the Washington Post, who are strong Hillary supporters. WaPo is terrified Corbyn's win will infect us and we'll elect Bernie!I hope they're right.
Kinda like Dukakis in a tank in '88. That photo sank his campaign. The man served in Korea, but that didn't matter to the hawk crowd pimping for daddy Bush.Funny, but their favorite UK iron woman (the one they now want on the 10 dollar bill) didn't get that kind of blow back from her charming Repubs in 'merika when she went tank riding in '85. And I think it looks equally bizarre.
I'm a sneaky snark right in there with you in GOP primaries (I live in such a deep red state that it resembles the sulfurous coals of hell) - but oh the GOP choices!! How to decide who is the worst??
I agree. Let's just elect a socialist. I'm too old for another revolution. We tried that back in the Sixties, but somehow it turned into the Sexual Revolution. Don't look at me, it was unanimous.
It's such a big deal that most can vote for whichever is the nominee, which shows up news media's big argument (apart from WSJ-like $18 trillion dollar lies) against Bernie Sanders. I hope that Hillary Clinton would have Obama's instincts to adjust (Larry Summers, Anthony Weiss, Keir Gumbs, bombing Syria, etc.) and would feel even freer than Obama not to nominate and appoint corporate/Wall Street stooges and rubber stampers, although her Iraq vote, bankruptcy "reform" vote, and inability to even discuss a financial transaction tax to counter financialization and casino markets have not been confidence inspiring.
The power of the bully pulpit (the longer we don't get card check and a financial transaction tax the more necessary they become) and appointments (beyond just the Supreme Court) matter. Obama had to appoint people who loosened lending standards again, cut the stimulus in half before even giving the estimate to Obama, a Labor department head to help Froman get TPP passed as is (!), a Treasury Secretary who prioritized runway foaming and is still trying to claim it was to prevent a second great depression, Jeffrey Immelt of GE, etc.
So while I will vote early and often for nominee Hillary Clinton, if Bernie loses, her winning also makes it more likely we will still need Bernie Sanders' political revolution (the next Bernie Sanders), to fight economic stagnation and corruption down the road.

Much staining of the clothing was seen by all.

That anyone can say "prison industry" with a straight face is a really, really bad sign.
