Re: FICA, everyone who earns income via a paycheck has to pay 6.2% towards Social Security, up to a max on $142,800 of taxable wages. Also 1.45% towards Medicare, with no limit. Employers have to pay an equal amount.
OTOH, low-income earners may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, which essentially provides a rebate on federal income taxes.
Of course, note that the FICA taxes above apply only to EARNED income (that earned from an actual job), and not things like interest income or capital gains.
