They'll retake what little Russia has gained in this last week and make them pay for those gains again. That's good, in several ways. It will certainly be bad for Russian morale. The real objective is probably Putin. He has suddenly become more "reasonable" in his demands, while of course retaining plenty of sticking points that he can break off negotiations over at his leisure. It's suspected that he's just trying to buy time to resupply and resume his offensive. The timing of this counter-offensive is probably a message to him that these tactics and head games will not work.
Best thing to do is plan and execute a large scale NATO air-ground exercise in Poland and at the same time send a carrier group with MEF into the Baltic Sea. This will force Putin to pull resources from Ukraine to protect his flanks since there is solid recent precedent for exercises turning into invasions.
