A Pennsylvania appeals court thinks Bill Cosby's a really funny guy, and laughed out of court his argument that he couldn't be prosecuted in a sexual assault case. Cosby had claimed he was immune because a prosecutor promised not to charge him if he'd give a deposition in a civil case against him, which Cosby ultimately settled.
I think there's a whole Hollywood industry behind covering this sort of thing up. I remember one male director joking "Who do I have to fuck to get this made?" because its that much a cliche.
And even as a general principle of contract law, courts are free to refuse enforcement of terms that are contrary to public policy interests... such as the ability to conduct a thorough criminal investigation .
Sorry to be answering so late. But, rape is a crime that one builds towards. Usually, you don't begin with an actual sexual assault, it begins by crossing sexual boundaries. It takes some convincing of the rapist, so to speak. It takes some skills. That's why I say he has lost perspective and don't think he would inevitably ended up a rapist.
If he had been busted and received negative consequences early on in the process and consistently gotten negative consequences whether legal consequences or just social -- messy divorce? He probably -- who knows for sure -- would not have advanced to being a drug rapist.
This is why battery, sexual aggressiveness, mild inappropriate behavior with children, hate-based aggression all need to be confronted upon sight. They all require a development in the abuser before they arrive fully formed.
There's a fairly profound difference between telling people to get out of poverty without assistance, and telling them to stop doing pointless, self-destructive things that only make their problems worse. Given the number of black artists with white fans, I doubt that any meaningful and constructive elements of black culture were in danger.
I'm glad you've found some peace...albeit hard won I imagine.
I wonder if this phenomenon has always been the case? I'm a bit older...certainly there was no shortage of jock/frat pukes when I was in college, and I don't think the term "date rape" had even been invented yet. Yet I don't recall the kind of predatory culture that allowed this virus to thrive. I'm perfectly willing to accept that maybe I was just very naive.
Well, I'm older than that (we'll just leave it at that!) Your description sounds disturbingly spot on...one of the revelations of reading "Missoula" was how prevalent this paradigm persists. Not to suggest that I spent college in some innocent paradise, but I think there was less of a binge-drinking/hookup culture then. There have always been predators; from what I gather, those inclined to be serial rapists now simply use that aforementioned "culture" to more easily identify, isolate, and assault their victims. I hope that doesn't come off like I'm victim-blaming.
You hear things that boil down to "well, if girls don't want to be raped, they should never go out, drink, and have fun"...which is stupid, unrealistic, AND blaming the victims.
But yeah, thanks, I enjoyed the exchange. Be well.
When I was a kid, I spent so long on diamatap due to allergies that it now keeps me awake.
I'm truly sorry that you speak from experience on this. I wonder sometimes how many people I actually know that this has happened to.
"Under The Banner of Heaven" is worth reading a couple of times.

They ARE yummy.
Yeah, he was my dad's idol. :/
"Decent" society, the Wonketariat? Nasty vile little snark mob libelz!

Where he's probably eatin' pudding and smoking big cigars.

I don't like Family Guy, but that was great.
It's too bad they had to cap the clip with Seth MacFarlane's typical it's-all-political-correctness'-fault dogwhistle.
