I'm not sure how many of today's old conservatives were ever free thinking hippies and such. Madison in the late 60's was a pretty liberal place, but there was still a healthy minority of students who were either conservative (except maybe about sex and/or drugs), or simply not politically aware.
While there have been many infamous cases of former "radicals" turning conservative, I suspect that the vast majority of today's old conservatives were young conservatives who have only gotten more hide-bound with age.
