Or maybe mermaids are like cats and just naturally come in a variety of colorations.

Of course the Nazis despise Black Ariel - we can't let Black women sing, now can we?

Doesn’t the fact that Ariel’s sisters are different ethnicities just mean that king Neptune “gets around”? I don’t think anyone’s surprised by that. Of course, that’s another reason for incels to be mad - Neptune gets all the girls.

I still crack up whenever I think of all the ranty sadwank manifestos rightwing Incel losers posted through their tears over the scientific unpossibleness of a negroid Mermaid.

A touchstone of western culture? The little mermaid? Are we bloody serious? I can’t imagine even Hans Christian Andersen agreeing with that take you pompous twit. Gad these people they twist themselves in to knots to avoid spewing racist and sexist garbage and they end up sounding absurd

Since Disney was a part of everyone's childhood, everyone thinks they're personally a stakeholder in whatever projects Disney comes up with. Taking personal offense at these things is a pretty pathetic version of Main Character Syndrome.

Eh, you can argue that the original story was something of a touchstone, if you look at the themes and the metaphor they imply, keeping in mind that it was written in the wake of centuries of Reformation and Revolution. Denmark itself was still feeling the effects of it's final split with Norway only a generation earlier, which probably directly informs the cruel choice of the plot.

As stated here, HCA's "fairy tale" has very little to do with the cinematic renditions. His works were DARK, & I am quite certain Disney would have a hard time remaking the original tales unless they wanted to purposefully scar children worse than Bambi ever could.

The colors of any characters' skin would be the least of the derivations from the original tale here.

A touchstone for Denmark perhaps but making it a part of the western canon is a huge exaggeration of its place

Maybe they're like the centaurs in Fantasia, who are all different arbitrary colors because it was more eye-popping on screen. Of course the animators were careful to pair them off by color...

Ta, Stephen. I never saw the first one; the composers who write music for Disney films aren’t good enough for this music snob. When I want a contemporary take on TLM I re-watch The Lure, a rather punk Polish film I enjoy immensely.

Good day, beloved Wonketteers. I love and appreciate you all and I bless us all with love, health, peace, and grace. I’m in heaven with Meccalopolis for the long weekend, or maybe the Catskills. Hard to tell them apart.

Please, please stay safe. Wear a mask or two, wash your hands and sanitize when you cannot wash, stop touching your face, take Vitamin D, get a bivalent booster for everyone over six months, avoid indoor and crowded outdoor gatherings and when you must meet, remove masks only to eat, drink, and take quick photos, and stay the fuck away from me and everyone with whom you do not share a roof. Do this because you love yourself and because I love you, too. Do this in memory of our sweet Treg, among over seven million dead worldwide. Do this to honor the nurses and other frontline medical personnel, especially ICU Hera Mrs Land Shark RN. Stay safe.

Slava Ukraini.
