The line about slaves working skilled jobs to "benefit themselves and their families” is correct, if you're talking about the family that owned them. Slaves built some really cool stuff around here in the early white settler period of the Ozarks, the early 1800s. There's an awesome story of a miller who moved to the remote wilderness with his teenage son and one slave and built the area's first mill on the North Fork River. And a slave was brought in from St. Louis to build a brick house here in Texas County, because there were no white masons in the remote wilds. That house is now the only pre-Civil War home in the county that's still standing.
Enslaved people had mad skills, but it didn't make them rich. Or free.
Not all slave owners were brutal sadists who enjoyed beating their slaves regularly just for fun. Some actually treated their slaves pretty decently, but they were still slaves without rights or any control of their own destiny. However, at the time slavery was legal the only people who had much in the way of rights or control were White men of means. Slaves, women, children and even White men without money or property were all pretty much at the mercy, of White men of wealth and social prominence.
