The absence of any gunshot wounds leads me to surmise that Officer Friendly left his service weapon at home. Unless of course he had already surrendered it on account of those other assault charges that had led to the whole desk duty thing.
Otherwise Uber Victim and Blah Samaritan would currently be gracing the front pages of America's finest newspapers, with the headline "Two Die as Cop Prevents Thug Carjacking."
