They didn't really get that he was supposed to be Italian, but in my experience kids here love watching stereotypes of themselves. I had one student tell me the story of the Nativity on Monday, and I had to stop him to say "that's the most Otalian way I have ever heard it", because there were hand gestures, an exasperated Mary being confused why the 'otel 'ad no spazio, Giuseppe bringing the donkey- so then he just went for it with multiple mammas mia and three finger pinches. It was bella.

There's an apartment building in Manhattan called 740 Park Avenue. It's not the only ultra-exclusive address in town, but it's the most sought-after one. (To get past the coop board, one of the requirements is to show at least $100 million in liquid assets.) Among its residents are:

David Koch (well, now his widow)Ezra Merkin’ (the man thought to have been the financier for Bernie Madoff)Stephen Schwarzman (CEO of the Blackstone Group)Woody Johnson, heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune, owner of the New York Jets (donor of many $millions to Trump, who gave him the ambassadorship to the UK)John Thain, former CEO of Merrill Lynch, currently on the Deutsche Bank boardSteven Mnuchin

It's a beautiful building and severe damage from, say, a jet plane flying into it would be tragic.

(Disclaimer: some of these luminaries may have moved elsewhere, though none to state residence at Ossining.)

there's a definite chance that at least one endangered species is on the menu at that party.

"...what they have in common is insecurity, humorlessness, cruelty, and every other social attribute that makes them unbearable to be around."

A considerable amount of their time is spent sizing up each others' bank personal wealth and how much power they can leverage. A smaller amount (but not zero) is spent fantasizing about banging someone's hotter wife/husband behind their back. It's gotta be exhausting to never shut the Machiavelli switch off.

Someone really ought to point out to them that white 15th century Europe really wasn't that white. There have been African and Indian people depicted in European art from this period right through to the modern day.

Yes, we have just been covering this as part of my history degree, how could you tell?

Tonja Jacobi, a professor at Emory University School of Law, told Bloomberg, “Supreme Court justices should be extraordinarily careful in not only having no actual ethical difficulties but having no appearance of an ethical conundrum as well."

This is why Justice Sotomayor should have made sure that nobody who looked vaguely like her, or who looked not much like her, or not at all like her dined with Democratic leadership in January. Where is her sense of responsibility?
