My 1960s Scouting experience was in urban Detroit (my hometown), and later, in urban Grand Rapids. GR back then was still a pretty righteous, God-fearing, Bible-thumping place (although that was changing by the late 60s), but surprisingly, preaching was largely confined to churches (imagine that) and it didn't extend to things like Scouting. At least, not where I was, and I was in a pretty conservative part of town.

I did encounter a few fundies in Scouts in GR, but only a few. Most of my fellow Scouts steered clear of them. I felt sorry for one guy who wasn't very popular, so I befriended him. He was mostly OK, just a regular kid, but then I had the misfortune of meeting his father, who denounced me as a sinner who God would surely punish. (Because he overheard me mentioning that I favored some liberal notions, like racial tolerance and wishing for an end to de facto segregation in housing.) But that was an isolated experience, an outlier.

Interesting. Now that I think about it, my sons' scout leader was a Mormon. (this is in Canada) I hated being a Scouting mom. My sons didn't give a shit about badges (Yes, they could easily have said, "We don't need no steeenkin badges"), and I always seemed to miss investiture night, which wasn't a huge deal for me or my sons, but made me look like a bad mom. I was SO relieved when they decided to quit. (and they only got involved in the first place because THEY insisted)

Oh, there is no sense there to be made. You just have to watch them spin in their own little circles, like the wasp that wanders into your house, until he dies, forlorn in the middle of your living room.

It's not the boy scouts he needs to worry about, it's the younger ones- the We blows

If BSA would award merit badges for life skills like choosing a restaurant, balancing a checking account, good aim in peeing in the toilet, and how to identify a trannie when you're picking up a ho in a dark bar, it would be a worthwhile organization.

Whutta fucking wanker.

I find the thought of an allegedly straight man like Fischer in charge of a Boy Scout troop very disturbing. Nothing is more repulsive than a person who makes a living by spewing hate.

I was a Scout for many years, from Cub Scouts all the way through to Explorer Scouts. All of the Scouting groups that I belonged to were sponsored in some way or another by churches, but there was never more than a barely perceptible religious element to any of it back then. (This was in the 1960s.) And the few references to religion that existed were strictly ecumenical, non-denominational and non-exclusionary. They emphasized universal brotherhood and our responsibility to help the poor and the infirm.

In any event, I always participated on my own terms, strictly to pursue just the things that I was interested in (nature awareness, playing baseball and having fun), and I had no interest in most other aspects of the program, like advancement through the ranks or earning badges. Most of my fellow Scouts did the same.

The 1960s-era BSA was very different in many ways than it became in later decades. There was very little quasi-military stuff in it, although that did begin to appear in very subtle ways as the Vietnam War went on. It felt very much like a social club and had zero feeling of being a junior militia.

The Scout Leaders were all just regular dads and, in Cub Scouts, moms (Den Mothers). Both of my parents held roles in our local Scouting organizations in at one time or another. The Leaders were all drawn from the parents of me and my friends and we knew most of them outside of Scouting.

Most manifestations of the organization today are almost unrecognizable to this old Scout. They constitute some entity that I never encountered back when I was in Scouting.

You sir, are not as dedicated as these loons are. How can they not think about how to stop hot, sweaty man loving 24/7, I know what they mean. It is only because I avoided being a scout that I narrowly missed a lifelong craving for dicks other than my own. Other than, you know, in porn... <a href="http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch\?v=iKB7vAFTdA8" target="_blank"> <a href="" rel="nofollow noopener" title="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKB7vAFTdA8">http://www.youtube.com/watc..." target="_blank"> <a href="" rel="nofollow noopener" title="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKB7vAFTdA8">http://www.youtube.com/watc..." target="_blank">" rel="nofollow noopener" title="www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKB7vAFTdA8">www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKB...
