It's a novel <i>and</i> a song. Actually, it's several songs. The line first came from a blues song by Furry Lewis, "I will turn your money green." Farina then used it for the title of his novel. The Doors and Nancy Sinatra (of all people) then recorded two different songs with it as the title.

So, hey, at least it gave several people jobs! Never mind the fact that Farina was killed in an accident right after the novel was released, and, of course, Jim Morrison died not long after recording his version of the song.

His safety record was bad, too. I seem to remember a Gospel report about somebody getting a beam in the eye.
