Thanks. It's one thing to give unsolicited advice about a mat for your sleeping bag, another about a good friend. You seem like an intelligent and capable person, I'm sure if you want or need advice, you'll ask me. Funny...I was talking with a friend the other day about some of the people we know with some serious issues; musicians with that are out there on the edge in terms of dope/drinking/mental health. They all have a wife/girlfriend who's a therapist. Talk about fulfilling a mutual need in one another, right? I think part of what I said reflects my own choices when it comes to musical companions. At this point in my life, music is a both a passion and a refuge, and I want it to be a real positive space; the musicians I've surrounded myself with are really good, self-aware people and decent human beings who aren't controlled by bad habits. That a number of them happen to be serious first-call players with jaw-dropping talent is a plus, but I would avoid them if they had serious issues. Of course, with old friends, it's a different story.

He tries. He doesn't drink anymore, doesn't use drugs that aren't prescribed to him. But he told me once the best part of his day is after he wakes up and before the meds he takes right away kick in, when he can "play" in his mind. It seems like a really hard way to live, having to chemically suppress something that feels normal to you so that you can be part of society, especially considering all the side effects the drugs have. So I try to keep that in mind when he fucks up. Plus, everyone has someone who "knows where the bodies are buried." He's mine. I heard Fat Mike said something stupid at Punk Rock Bowling last weekend, and now Stone Brewing dropped their sponsorship of the Punk in Drublic festivals, which are actually all completely over now except for the camp. I wonder what it means for this weekend...

I've known a few people with serious mental health issues who are able to function in society if they continue taking their meds, but exactly as you say, they feel the meds suppress everything else, including who they really are. It is a horrible way to have to live. And I won't even ask about the buried bodies.

Funny...a few weeks ago I was going to ask you how Fat Mike was doing. He's such a smart, engaging guy, but I worry that he's becoming a caricature of a snotty, aging punk rocker. Stone took a pretty big chance to lend their name to this-not that I'm a big champion of corporate sponsorship, but there are worse sponsors that Stone; sorry Fat Mike managed to fuck it up. Hope it doesn't fuck up your weekend too.

OK, so I successfully used that "google" thingie you mentioned. Apparently Melvin and Fat Mike made some onstage quips about the Las Vegas massacre, with Mike saying "that was terrible, but at least they were country fans and not punk rock fans". Of course this is the kind of risqué stuff they make jokes about all the time...being familiar with them and their banter, and being a Wonkette fan, it doesn't trigger me as it might others...because I totally get how black humor is often the only way you can stay sane about this kind of madness. That said, at Punk Rock Bowling, in Vegas, it was extraordinarily thoughtless.

Yeah, I'm always amazed at how incredibly bone-headed he can be, for such a smart person.

I always claim 27 as my forever age, too!! Must be something magical about that age....

Must be! I'm not really sure why I picked it.

ohmygod... dude. I would rate this weekend "exactly as much of a glorious shitshow as you would expect, now enhanced by the loss of sponsors and 2 headlining bands!" I am longwinded, so maybe not the best topic for a public forum, but I'd be happy to email some stories if you want.Did you happen to see NOFX's apology statement?

I've been on pins and needles wondering. Once I found out that they got axed I felt pretty bummed out on your behalf, and annoyed with them for fucking this up. I think what I saw was Fat Mike's pre-apology statement...how he couldn't sleep etc.

But yes...I would love to hear ALL the stories. biggaloot@q.com I'll delete this once I know you have it.

Got it.

Did you get my email address? Not trying to hurry you to use it, but now I can't find the post where I left it to delete it. Can you delete someone else's posts? Why am I such a dope sometimes?

BTW, this is the post where you left your email. It's still in my history. Not sure if you found/deleted it.

I adore Imagine Dragons and I'm an old. In my head, I'm eternally 27. I used to think it was just, you know, me, kinda somewhere on the 'normal' fringe. I recently discovered that I have a learning disability called dyscalculia which means I don't 'get' numbers. The implication for me is that I don't recognize the passage of time. So yeah, I'll be 27 in my head forever, which is actually kind of cool.
