ZW, so sorry it happened over at Mastodon. I always enjoy your contributions.

"couldn’t they then also do that by claiming to be trans boys?"

which is why regularly inspecting the genitals of children is so important! this will not be traumatizing or harmful to children in any way and the people that desperately want this job are definitely very normal non-weirdos who are only concerned about protecting children from sexual perverts and pedophiles.

imagine thinking that made any sense or should be something we should do. yowza.

nfortunately, this was not the case everywhere, as some cities in more conservative areas of the country saw about an equal turnout on both sides.

I do not see that as an unfortunately.

More conservative places saw equal turnouts is good. That means they do not even have a majority in their own strong holds

Regina’s was too damn even and polite. Saskatoon, however, got into the true spirit of traditional Pride and kicked some bigot ass. Hats off for the temperance colony!

Well I will say the only kids yanked from school for this protest here had big Trans Lives Matter signs. So good on that dad!

the one in Edmonton was actually pretty near my neighbourhood, but I didn't know anything about it until reading my news update this morning.

Edmonton is a not conservative city in a conservative province, so I'm a little surprised the assholes outnumbered the good guys two to one. But maybe most people were like me, and didn't even know it was happening.

I also didn't hear about it until after the fact. I am proud to say that my city (Victoria) had 2 counter-protests, and it is estimated that the bigots were out-numbered by about 5 to 1.

Victoria was another city where bigots ate knuckle sandwiches for lunch, so big ups to them!

“... are hoping that fear of their parents finding out will keep kids in the closet ...”

If you ask, they’ll tell you it worked for them and helped them chase off teh ghey out of them; that they’re happily married to some woman whose name they can’t remember right now and that hanging out with their buddy Lorne all the time is totally not weird or anything.

"But 70 percent of Canadian parents say that if they had a trans child, they would do whatever they could to accommodate them, and while it’s certainly not perfect, that’s the real majority."

Forgive my 'optimistic' take, but I'd wager that even MORE would "would do whatever they could to accommodate them" if it ACTUALLY happened in real life and wasn't just a theoretical question...Its easy to be tough on paper with

"NO KID OF MINE IS GONNA blah blah blah blah"...But as has been oft noted , trans kids begin expressing their true genders at a VERY early age WAY before any sexual interest or preference begins...Any moderately attentive parent is gonna have a good running start on what to expect as their child grows...From my limited understanding, its rarely a surprise when a kid comes out as trans...

However, RW conservative garbage is RARELY 'attentive' to say the least...OTOOH, I think some of them would have a 'Senator Portman' epiphany if it ACTUALLY happened in their family

Two people my adult kids went to school with have come out as trans. One was a medium close friend of my daughter, one was just a kid I knew from going to concerts, etc. And even with that fairly minimal contact, there was zero surprise. They were pretty clearly always who they are.

And if they ARE hiding it, they're doing it for personal safety reasons which is really depressing to think about

Never forget: École Polytechnique Tragedy (Montreal Massacre) "On 6 December 1989, a man entered a mechanical engineering classroom at Montreal’s École Polytechnique armed with a semi-automatic weapon. After separating the women from the men, he opened fire on the women while screaming, “You are all feminists.” Fourteen young women were murdered, and 13 other people were wounded. The shooter then turned the gun on himself. In his suicide note, he blamed feminists for ruining his life." https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/polytechnique-tragedy

If nothing else all this attention and focus on trans people has actually proven just how vicious and fascist the anti-trans haters are. And it's a reminder that hatred against a minority has no place in free societies.

That’s the most fucking ridiculously transparent law, forcing kids to notify their parents if they realize they are trans. Because if their parents are cool, they would know anyway. And if they are dicks, then the kid won’t tell them no matter what. So…as you say Robyn, it serves no purpose other than to force kids to stay in the closet, where if the fuckers have their way they will hopefully suicide and save them the trouble. Fuckers!

Expand full comment

The thing not said in the excellent article is that the vast majority here thinks this law is utter crap and cannot fathom why it was enacted. No one but the Freedom Convoy dicks think it’s a well thought out plan, nobody likes it, everyone thinks the government is full of douches over this.

They certified 6 friends of the court in the injunction lawsuit and 5 are in favour of the injunction. No school boards, INCLUDING THE CATHOLIC ONES, support this. It’s very heartening.

Can you imagine the level of parental narcissistic denial it would take to NOT KNOW? From the few people I know personally with trans kids, Its pretty damn clear REAL early on...

Ta, Robyn. There is NEVER a reason kids should be outed to the parents by anyone at school. Never.

If my kid's school called me up to tell me my kid was gay I would ask them what f*cking business it was of theirs.

And then I'd start looking for a different school.

Canada probably produces more than its share of weird peppy folk rock bands but I’m going to take polite exception with your linked examples. Barenaked Ladies absolutely but They Might Be Giants are actually from Brooklyn. (You’re perhaps mistaking them for beloved children’s entertainer the Friendly Giant.) And we like to pretend Moxy Fruvous never happened since it launched the career of #MeToo poster boy and serial abuser Jian Ghomeshi.

I actually managed to work the phrase "they might be giants" into the text of a scientific paper, where it served a legitimate purpose. This somehow enhances my already VERY healthy opinion of myself.

Work "barenaked ladies" into your next paper. But don't worry about working "moxy fruvous" in.
