The thing is, it was a different time, only twenty-ish years removed from FDR. If Nixon were starting his Congressional career today, he'd be Allen West. He was a venal, evil, vastly paranoid, and unfortunately quite bright motherfucking asshole, and he'd be leading the shit parade today. He only looks reasonable because the Republicans have lurched so far to the right.

My high school US History teacher always said, "Nixon will be remembered by history as a great president."

Today's GOP not only makes Nixon look liberal, they make him look sane.

"If the right people had been in charge of Nixon's funeral, his casket would have been launched into one of those open-sewage canals that empty into the ocean just south of Los Angeles. He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. Even his funeral was illegal. He was queer in the deepest way. His body should have been burned in a trash bin." ~ Hunter S. Thompson

I remember Gerald Scarfe's cartoons of Nixon in the 'Sunday Times' (UK). They gradually got more extreme until Nixon's head consisted of a cranium, essentially cut off at the bags under his eyes, and a mouth with attached jowls, the two parts being held together by an elongated nose.

Supposedly Kennedy always regretted his opposition to Nixon's health care plan, but at the time he was certain a better plan could be done.
