Hmm, almost as though every single Conservative economic theory has been proven completely absurd in the past 40 years, isn't it?

Almost

My late RWNJ brother was a swing-shift manager at a Wendy's. We found out that he was living in a tent in some waste ground not far from his store because he'd been evicted from his former apartment because his roommate flaked off and moved to Georgia and he couldn't come up with the first month/last month payment.

IK,R? I'm beginning to get the feeling that all those Gen X types who promoted "shareholder value über alles" are finally becoming obsolete.

Now if we can break free of the tip economy. I get annoyed when I'm with Americans in Europe who tip like the server is surviving on tips like here in the states. No, being waitstaff or even a busser or a potwasher means that you get paid enough to live on without your customers' charity. The only time I actually considered American-style tipping when I was in a tiny town in Germany where there were a bunch of Americans about for a local festival, and they all tipped the 19-year-old waitress big time as she said that she had plans to visit the US during the summer. It wasn't so much tipping as contributing to her vacation fund. (Being German, she already had something like six weeks paid vacation, but it didn't hurt to add some extra Ameros in her kitty, as we fcking upcharge for everything.)

One of our cats, a creature that is supposedly unable to taste sugar, is absolutely mad for watermelon. Mrs. H can only eat it an a kind of defensive crouch.

Maybe it's just that I'm a young technocrat, but I see automation as a good thing. Robots behind the McDonalds counter means fewer humans getting yelled at. Robots cleaning the sewers means fewer humans dealing with bodily waste. Robots constructing buildings means fewer humans in danger. The fact that "we'll automate your job" is considered a threat is a symptom of the same problem that causes people to put up with angry customers, stenches, and heights for low wages, and is subject to the exact same solution set. My proposal: every time a business threatens someone with the job-stealing robots, we raise corporate taxes and put the proceeds toward UBI.

Well, it was a happy result of his decision. Was it his intent? That's a very interesting question.

I'm trying to recall 8th grade...

He reasoned that it was good advertising to have his employees drive his cars. For years after that motor car assembly were excellent jobs. General Motors was also called "Generous" Motors by it's employees, but those days are gone.
