The timing of the "defund" movement was problematic, I think, because police would point to any talk of cuts as a response to that movement rather than mayors/cities making tough calls. Even *before* George Floyd's murder, the MPLS police union head was opposing any potential cuts, dismissing funding for critical social services. All that mattered was keeping his own budget intact.

"Trump won Georgia or Trump won in 2020" has been "whataboutedit" to be no worse than "Gore won Florida or the SCOTUS made Bush president, etc."

It also seems like there is never an honest discussion about police closure rates—and I don't mean just arresting some random person to say that you closed the case, but actually solving it. The closures rates for violent crime in particular are abysmal in cities across the U.S. and don't improve even when they keep getting more and more funding.

In addition to the obvious problems of overly aggressive, racist, psychotic cops and the inherent injustices in the system broadly, we also need to talk about how many of them frankly suck at their supposed jobs. I've seen stats that 80% of what they do is just pulling people over or harassing random people on the streets. Doesn't leave much time for actual crime solving and prevention.

There are no Chicago gun laws & the only Illinois gun law is the requirement for a Firearm owners ID card from the state police. No crooks have a FOID card.

its so hard to predict how people will react to the lockdown tho - one of our premiers here was king of the lockdowns, and a whole bunch of other pandemic stuff that was super unpopular, but was reelected comfortably. we all thought he'd be a goner but not the case...

Not necessarily. A decrease in crime in areas where less wealthy people live could outweigh the increase in rich areas. (Like that would happen, but it’s mathematically possible.)
