With Weed and Justice For All Well, this is quite cool: The Oakland City Council has voted to use the process for granting legal marijuana licenses as a means of addressing the racial injustices of the War On Some Drugs. Oakland was already the first (and so far only) city in the country to set aside 50 percent of medical marijuana and cannabis business permits for people who've been convicted of marijuana crimes. In a revision passed unanimously Tuesday, the measure was revised to address data showing that while blacks and whites make up roughly equal parts of Oakland's population, blacks have faced much higher arrest rates for pot.
I've always suspected that was the driving force behind DC legalizing it. They knew they'd be unlikely to get legal sales, BUT cops are no longer arresting brown & black people for bullshit weed charges. It's a HUGE criminal justice issue.
Just look at Colorado. We legalized weed, along with a robust regulatory system to control it. I think it should be the model for other states. It can be modified to serve local interests and it guarantees local control for jurisdictions who don't want it.
In the meantime, our economy has quite literally exploded and not just with pot jobs. We have become an incubator for tech startups because while affordability is a growing problem, it's still much cheaper here than Silicon Valley. New luxury apartment complexes are popping up all over the metro.
In fact, those of us who have been here for years are conflicted. It's becoming impossible to get away from the crowd, even on the weekends, when everyone goes to the mountains. You have to plan a simple weekend camping trip a year in advance. Campground reservations on weekends or holidays are full by April and March in some places.
Ironically, we have some of the most stringent regulations on Gas & Oil production in the country. And we still have a very active industry, which illustrates the lie that regulation stifles industry.
So yes, we're booming in both the good and bad ways.
Oh hell yeah, without that bitch anxiety-monkey on my back, I'm more focused and confident in my work. I take the time to get something done correctly the first time rather than rushing through it and having to correct it later. And while building spreasheets and turning pivot tables for data analysis certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, it makes my brain happy. It's hard to describe, but there's a kind of symmetry to it.
My wife is a baker and we're both hoping for all-around legalization because it would be good for business. Her idea is to open a bakery close to a dispensary. We both know that's a very smart move and just makes good business sense. If she could do that, even as a small business, she'd need to employ no less than seven people. That's creating jobs. If she succeeded enough, she would open a second location and expand the business, creating more jobs.
That's how you create jobs, not with wild proclamations with no substance declared at 3AM on twitter.
There is a lot around, or you can program it yourself. For this level of detail and color and zoom, you'll probably need a pile of powerful computer time. I think this zoom took four weeks to calculate. Not sure of the computer, though.

Is the Fractal freeware still around? I used to play around with that for hours.

Had to scroll back up to check: yup, anwisok posting more high-quality critter images!

I for one understand it. Something about imposing order on chaos, perhaps?

What if we're just in a lonely arm of arbitrary magnification in a fractal universe?

I'll put a fiver on, 'Because I'm a Republican, duh.'

Yes, and while you're doing that, meditate on the fact that it's a real structure*, and it's infinite.
* Yes, it is a visual representation of a mathematical thing, but that's still real in my book.

It helps a lot with that. If you don't like smoking, or you don't want to invest in vaping, try edibles (I make my own), and proceed cautiously.
Totally explains that "I'd like to be a tree" thing.
