Even in the brave new world of the 24-hour news cycle, the modern equivalent of the old newspaper saying holds true: "Never get into a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel."
Frankly, the CNN response has a decidedly "don't fuck with us; we have the goods" tone to it. It may be inadvertent; ASCII is not the most expressive medium, Dickens and Conrad notwithstanding. Were it up to me, I probably would have limited it to "CNN is not publishing HAS’ name because he is a private citizen. Citizens, please remember that your mom can see everything you post."
