Most people are too worried about jobs, inflation, war and voting to care about the culture wars. If I'm worried about keeping my Social Security and covering my medical bills, I'm not going to give a shit about LGBTQ issues - and my daughter is gay. Our plates just aren't big enough, and the DNC needs to understand that.

Fucking Newsom- 🤬he ABSOLUTELY knows that what he is saying about trans athletes is bullshit. In all the time that he has been in California politics, I guarantee that the details of how many trans athletes there are and how hormones work, etc., etc., have been explained to him ad nauseum. “Politically Expedient” is his middle name. I have no doubt in my mind that he would throw the rest of the queer community under the bus if the winds blew that way. Once upon a time I really liked him, but now I do not trust him. I hope we can find someone better to run for president in ‘28.

So you don't count the Meidas Touch network on social media somewhere in all of those paragraphs above? They are better and stronger than any of the right wing podcasts.

Sad for CNN, glad I don't work there any more.

Rachel on MS NOW at 1 pm Eastern.

Thanks for trying to put a positive spin on things Robyn. Unfortunately, CNN lurching to the right before being drowned in the bathtub doesn’t inspire the same visceral rage as ICE kidnapping children and shooting people in the head. So I just can’t see torches and pitchforks massing around Larry Ellison’s compound. They’ve used the hammer, but maybe now realize the gloved fist is more effective.

Not sure, but I think this might hurt his chances for a Nobel peace prize.

maybe if Iran gives him a jet.

He’s much more fun when he just blows up the internet

There must be DOOZIES about to come out from the Trump Epstein Files!!!

For journalism in the US, you still have ProPublica. But they don't do a comprehensive "here's everything important that happened today" service, just good investigations into vital topics. For global news, a combination of AP, The Guardian, the BBC, AFP/France24 and DW can work.

Mark Linimon's avatar

The BBC has gone paywalled.

There used to be laws against monopolies (like breaking up ma bell) those need to be enforced again. I've been getting most of my news from England for a while, but I don't know of any Canadian news outlets.

Is turning to other global northern English language media going to give you a true world-view? Assume all media is biased in one way or another and shop around. If you're totally monolingual there are subtitles on youtube videos.

Zathera's avatar

As an old person with cataracts it gets hard to read subtitles. I've also found many subtitles just say speaking foreign language. I do look at several sources for news. The Telesur looks interesting I have it bookmarked now thank you.

It is interesting that the government blocked Penguin Random House from acquiring Simon Schuster, yet this is fine. Oh, now that I think about it, it may have been the Biden admin that blocked that merger.

Zathera's avatar

Thanks I now have them bookmarked.

Not always the best English speakers as news readers, but also Telesur English.

I really try not to get all conspiracy theorist about things, but...has anyone had problems with watching MS NOW? Nearly overnight, Roku Sling-- and only Sling-- went from perfect performance for hours to 5+ glitches per hour, always claiming no Internet connection.

No other device is affected.

No other Sling offering has behaved this way.

Zipley Fiber sent two service people. All looks fine.

I'm about to call Best Buy Total Tech in desperation.

Maybe it's sunspots and solar flares. My thoughts have been dark. If I couldn't stop am investigation targeting me... I'd certainly strangle the news that would make it public just as early voting begins.

Who else we gonna get as our nom for '28? Has anyone distinguished themselves besides Gavin Newsom? Can we put purity politics aside in the interest of winning?I'm getting pretty tired of hearing stuff like "fuckers like Gavin Newsom". No offense intended, but Jeeeeezus. He's a Democrat, and he can win. And don't even talk to me about AOC or Pete B. Hope my dif of opinion doesn't get me banned here, because this is a convo we need to have. Who. Else. Do. We. Have? No more last minute crap like the last two elections. Whomever wants to president needs to step up, like, now-ish.

Mark Linimon's avatar

Mark Kelley. Plus: military experience. Also plus: has not said anything really stupid (that I know of).

Daniel O'Riordan's avatar

Human rights are non-negotiable. That's my bright red line. The moment we go down that road, we lose, because every marginalized group in the Democratic Party would know they could potentially be thrown under the bus for votes.

Vote for us until we decide you're expendable because what choice do you have isn't exactly a winning strategy.

Whale Chowder's avatar

There are a bunch of people positioning themselves. How about we let the primaries play out? We're over two years away from the next presidential election for fuck's sake.

tim gueguen's avatar

Newsom's first guest on his podcast was Charlie Kirk. Which wouldn't have been a bad thing if he'd actually challenged that disgusting bigot. Instead he seemed to lean towards Kirk's "Trans people are icky!" stance.

Chino Cherokee's avatar

I totally agree with everything you're saying.

This is so fucking important. We need a candidate that can ABSOLUTELY WIN, then start the big cleanup.

No question!!

Lynn Veit's avatar

IF a democrat wins, even then it won't be easy. MAGA will scream "FRAUD!" and "STOLEN ELECTION!", perhaps even spontaneously stage another January 6. After all, they will now fully expect pardons from the Vile Orange Cretin if they get into trouble.

BlueSpot's avatar

At least the approval process for this mega-merger will still take two-to-four years, with plenty of legal challenges to the merger still to come. It's possible that Discovery-Warner might be a poison pill for Paramount+ and the Ellisons, and it could cause their entire corporate empire to collapse before they can even touch CNN or the other properties owned by Discovery-Warner.

Permanently Confused@68's avatar

Okay. So at least there is hope maybe?

"The "Pentagon Pizza Index" more than TRIPLED this afternoon at the 3:00 Hour; the precise hour President Trump promised he would "make a decision" about Iran.

The "Pentagon Pizza Index" is an automated monitoring of the levels of business being done at the Pizza places nearest to the Pentagon.

A long time ago, people realized that whenever the US is going into a big military situation, thePizza places near the Pentagon get big spikes in business."
